My neighbour has a young Damson tree with abundance of fruit and the stones are being transferred into my garden by the birds. My Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is eating them, as he has had these stones in his loose bowl movement. Could anyone tell me if these stones pose a health problem? He may have eaten grass to rid the stones that could of caused his motion to be loose? Awaiting your advice with thanks.
I don't want to worry you but my friend lost a young dog from gorging on damsons. The stones contain cyanide. The dog went downhill very quickly, was put on a drip, went blind, fitted and the kidneys packed in.
I am not saying the odd one or two will do this but this dohg had spent the morning clearing the windfalls and she was not aware of it until too late.
I would go out and regularly clear up or limit access to that part of the garden.
My idiot spaniels keep eating the plums and cherries in our garden, I do try to clear up but it's impossible to keep ahead of them. I think I've heard that if they are swallowing them whole and the stones are passing straight through, it's probably ok, but it's a bad idea if they are chewing them into pieces.
