Topic Dog Boards / General / 8month old GSD with ear problems. Help please?
- By SuzieB [gb] Date 25.06.11 15:43 UTC
Hi I'm new here and have an 8 month old Gsd.
He is a wonderful dog but has suffered with mites in his ears. The problem is now rectified but he continues to hold his left ear down. The right ear he holds up perfectly the other is intermittent more down than up. He appears to be developing a crease in this ear and wondered if anyone could suggest ways in which we can encourage him to hold his ear up permanently. We have tried taping but over a length of time he becomes irritated with it. He has raw meaty bones, pigs ears dental sticks etc to chew on. One thing I have noticed is that he has a preference to chew on his right side.
Any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks

Has he had ear infections previously? With his preference to eating on his right side i would be concerned that he may have an infection deep in the ear canal...but of course the prefernce for right side could be entirely that...preferance!

never had ear infections other than the mites which is now cleared and his ears are fine vet has checked them. Reckon he just has the right hand side preference

I only mentioned an infection as i know a couple of gsd's with one ear pointed to the floor and they were caused by an infection. Not sure what else to suggest other than to persevere with the taping.

Are ALL his teeth through?

Some sheps do have soft ears and maybe he is going to be one, he is still young and it could change personally I would just leave it alone and see what happens as long as there are no infections going on. My friend who breeds gsd has one georgeous male who has one floppy ear he is now 4 and occasionally it goes up true he couldnt be shown but she wouldnt change him for the world

Yea all his teeth are through hence why I'm asking for advice. I know ears can be erratic while still teething

We wouldn't swap him for all the tea in china he has a fantastic temperament, handsome looking fella not overly interested in showing him but he just looks soo much more handsome when both his lugs are up. He's still gawjuss with one up one down tho
