hi all
i have a beautiful full kc reg blue bridle whippet whois called max,hes 19 inches tall and
weve had him from been 10 weeks old and turned a year 20th april this year,i am just wonder what is the best age to stud out for a whippet? he is such a loving dog i have experience of his breed as ive had whippets growing up but never stud them out so im looking for some advice please
thanks maz

The 1st question you should be asking is not what age he should be, but should you breed from him at all. Do you do any activities with him like racing or showing?
hi there, max is a pet,but in tip top condition!,wud chase to race tho! i want a pup from him n thats the reason i want to stud him out,so age is no concern?

Max sounds lovely what about contacting your boys breeder and seeing if you can get a nephew or grand nephew of your boy instead?
There are lots of whippets bred every year, lots of blue brindles. In my opinion you should not breed from him at all if he hasn't proven his worth in some field. You will not have any responsible breeder wanting to use your dog as there are many, many show and race winners at stud. The only people who will want to use your boy are what we term backyard breeders, people who may have good intentions but don't actually know much about their breed or have a good reason to breed. These sadly are the puppies that are more likely to end up in rescue. There are thousands of dogs in rescue all over the country and we all need to be responsible and ensure we're not adding to the problem.

Your dog is far too young to use. Go back to his breeder & put your name on their waiting list for another puppy.

18/ 24 months is the youngest id use, but bitch owners only want the best for their bitches so will go to show/ race winning health tested if applicable studs.
These are the sort of questions you need to be asking about yourself.....Some stud dogs temperaments change after being used I know one lady who had to sell her boy as he became very dog aggressive and unmanageable would you be able to cope if he did change?
You are also responsible for any puppies produced by your boy so can you house any pups that cannot be sold?
Have you done any breed specific health tests if required?
Has you boy been proven in some field?
And are you capable of giving whelping advice to the bitches owner if required.?
If the answer is no to any of the above then don't put him up for stud.
HI everone
thank you all for your replies!
some really good advice and ive taken it all in! i wud love a pup from him! but it sounds easier either going back to ware we bought him or just looking for another pup! and then we only av the pup and max to think of n not the whole brood! i wondered if their temprements changed n thats 1 thing i wudnt want! he is fab with the kids n other dogs n cudnt wish for a better dog than him!
thanks agin!
There was a fantastic thread a couple of weeks ago about someone who had 2 Boxers and was asking about temperament change. Typically I can't find it now but if anybody else can maybe they could post the link.
Found it. The thread was posted by Gemma86 on 31.05.2011 but I'm rubbish and can't do links.
