thanks

You need to give more info about the bitch i.e. ,how old,how many in first litter, did she rear them i.e. did they survive, any complications in pregnancy etc etc or are you asking something like she didn't catch the first time so are trying again?

But to be honest even if she only had one pup and raised it out of principle Id only breed once a year, otherwise your not much better than a puppy farmer, back to back breeding's are rightly frowned upon.

Not something I would consider doing under any circumstances.

i am not going to do it, i just wanted to no other peoples thoughts on this.
I just think that if a dog was in the wild that they would have a litter everytime they were in heat.
and some experts say it is better for a dam to have a litter every heat

So what do you think, has anyone ever done this

Definately not every heat but I cannot see why a bitch cannot be healthy enough following a untaxing litter to have another at the following season and the KC will allow it when it is a small scale hobby breeder registering it.

Bitches in the wild are very environmentally effected with breeding, so if there was a food shortage the litter or breeding would fail. Equally if the bitch struggled bringing up a litter she may miss a season, Im not that well informed on how often a wolf comes into season but I have a feeling its only once a year anyway, so they may well have a litter each season but have more than 12 months between the litters.

People have bred season on season before but as said above usually by puppy farmers.

An outdated view

Wild Canines only come in season once a year, so that pups are born in spring when food is more available.

Also in the wild only the alpha bitch breeds at all, the other bitches will help rear puppies as they will have phantom pregnancies and be able to produce milk.

A bitch will normally be socially mature and around 3 years of age before she is an Alpha, and will maybe hold that position for about 3 years.

So you can see there is nothing natural about over-breeding any bitch.

Must admit I would see it as a no-no. If a bitch misses on a mating then that is a completely different thing ..Personally I would like to see a bitch have at least one season (even if she comes in 8 months later ) preferably more

No no for me.

To much stress and not enough of a break for a bitch.

You know I think it depends on several things. If for various reasons the bitch is getting on a bit when she has her first litter, then it is only a singleton, or maybe two if it's a breed that usually has more, well then I could see a case for mating her on her next season.

I think having blanket rules can occasionally be counter-productive. I am thinking of a Ch bitch I know who missed twice, then had a singleton. She's now turned 5. If she's not mated on her next season, I know her owner will leave it at that. She's a super bitch, fab temperament as well.

Things aren't always as clear cut as they might seem.

especially if the seasons are more than than 6 - 7 months apart.

I have a bitch with 9 or 10 months cycles, and because I have kept a pup from her half sister can't keep another for anther two years, by whcih time she will be 6 1/2.

If she misses, and then on I don't get the desired bitch pup, then I may be running out of time to get a puppy from her.  So another litter 10 months later would be justified assuming she was fit again.

Do think this is a matter for the individual breeder and the individual bitch - every situation is different and although in general you would not condone over breeding or breeding from a bitch at consecutive seasons there will be times when breeding twice in a year would be considered by all concerned to be acceptable. Just because a practice may not be considered acceptable in the general run does not mean that it is always so or that it has always to be in anyway cruel, unacceptable or illegal.

I agree with the Elkhound members!

You cannot say it is wrong in every case.

Back in the days when scanning Cavaliers was pretty rare and finding clear animals was very difficult, I found myself with a bitch who scanned clear yet had missed to 3 different dogs.
She was getting on and as I dont mate them over the age of 6 I had the choice of being content with  her first litter of one male or try again within my 'safety window' and get a bitch puppy in from this important little bitch.

I mated back to back and got 3 bitches and 1 dog...all placed in homes with people who want to help in the identification of healthy individuals.

Sometimes the bigger picture needs to be considered.
