Hi All

Tilly seems to be reacting to her collar. When I put it on her she gets bald patches on the neck under her head and little raised lumps that look like flea bites. I have checked her and she doesn't have fleas and its only the area where the collar is. The collar isn't too tight and she generally only wears it for walks; although I will admit to leaving it on occasionally if things get hectic when we come in (i.e. 3 year old needs the toilet asap or things like that)

Her collar is just a pets at home one nothing special as she is still growing so fast I didn't want to buy anything too fancy. I haven't heard of this type of reaction before so am a bit confused on how to treat it. Obviously I am going to get a different collar (suggestions on the type would be great) but how do I encourage the hair to grow back and the skin to calm down?

Thanks in advance

What is the collar made from?

These collars are good, though I'm not sure who stocks them in this country these days:

They are made from natural hemp with so-called non-toxic, low-impact dyes.

I like Dorwest Comfrey & Calendula cream for irritated skin:

Or you could try a bit of Johnson's baby powder instead, that's quite soothing.

And you can use Piriton tablets for allergic dogs if you're sure that's what it is.

Good luck with her.

Has this happened ever since you've had this collar on her or is it a new reaction?

If it's been an ongoing problem then try washing the collar in something hypoallergenic just in case it's something in the dye or treatment.  Alternatively, if it's a new problem, she might have got something 'bitey' stuck under collar - it happens with me and gnat bites!

I can second hemp collars, I've imported a few from Earthdog and they are lovely but aren't great if your dog is a swimmer - constantly being wet and dry makes the hemp a bit brittle

Try a rubber collar from Dublin collars, very hygienic, cannot harbour parasites and does not smell, you can just rinse under water.
However, have you made sure that she is not allergic to nickel if it is a cheap collar?

Hi

I had noticed a problem when I first bought the collar but as she managed to get fleas around then I just assumed it was flea bites. Since then though she has been treated and the problem seems to be worse if I leave the collar on her for any length of time. I switched to her old collar for a short time and it got better but there wasn't much growing room left in that collar and it is definately no longer an option as she has grown so much now.

Its this one  http://www.petsathome.com/shop/pink-bones-nylon-dog-collar-by-pets-at-home-31804 so I cant see what is making her react :(

there is only one company I know in the uk who sells earthdog collars and that is mangomutt  http://www.mangomutt.com/home/home.php?cat=3  but I find they are cheaper to buy in the US works out around £15 each plus p&p, I have these for all my dogs and think they are well worth the cost.
