Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / is my dog pregnant?
- By ewobaba [gh] Date 11.06.11 13:21 UTC Edited 11.06.11 16:03 UTC
my large breed dog had a tie during breeding and its 34 days now, I can't see any sign.
- By Lexy [gb] Date 11.06.11 14:13 UTC
Depending on the breed, it may be too early to tell anyway...only half way through the pregnancy(if there is one)
- By Brainless [gb] Date 11.06.11 16:35 UTC
With an average size litter most bitches will nto look obviously pregnant until about 6 weeks after mating, if the litter is small or the bitch big and roomy then often in a first time pregnancy especially you may still not see much sign.

Thanks I have been very worried.
- By ewobaba [gh] Date 15.06.11 18:23 UTC
its now 38 days still no physical symptoms. am anxious to see something, its making me get worried again. please need advice
- By Brainless [gb] Date 15.06.11 18:35 UTC
wait and see, still too early especially wth a first litter. You can Scan anytime after 28 days, or X-ray after 6 weeks.

go to your vet if it is worrying you that much as already been said you can get a scan as this will confirm (can't tell numbers though)

shes only just over 5 weeks. I couldn't tell with my dog at that time. By 7 weeks I could just about tell. First litters are slow to show particularly if its a small one.

know a woman called sam will scan at your home from 4 weeks after mating...shes spot on with dates and nos

The OP seems to be in Ghana so scanner recommendations are probably not going to be much help ;-)

OOOPS told you....blonde moment ,but then again she might travel !!!!!!!
- By ewobaba [gh] Date 16.06.11 18:22 UTC
jane you correct, its not easy to get a scanner here if not I would have done that. Am in Ghana.

well the only thing you can do is just wait another 2 weeks you should have a pretty good idea by then. she may start to loose her waist line from now on, but if it is her first litter she may take longer to show. see if you can have a look on you tube for pictures/video's preferably of your breed of dog to compare so you get an idea. :-)

Still a little bit worried, now I can see that my bitch have added a wight, and the chest side is a little bigger but I can't see a swollen stomach. bit confused.
- By ewobaba [gh] Date 27.06.11 09:43 UTC
Its now 7 weeks, is this how mastiff's are or what is happening?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 27.06.11 09:51 UTC Edited 27.06.11 09:56 UTC
A big bodied large breed first time pregnant bitch may still not show much of anything at this stage, it's the last week or 10 days.

With my medium size breed I have had bitches at 7 weeks barely showing, especially if you were not used to the more subtle signs.

Certainly at this stage and X-ray would show you the skulls and spines enabling a pretty reliable head count, and this is common practise in the USA (though not in UK where Ultrasound scanning at 4 - 5 weeks is more common)

It's 8 days to her suppose time and I can't see a swollen belly, all I see is a bigger chest and breast. she has added more weight. It's so sad that I can scan here in Ghana. I really want pups from her, the whole thing is getting me frustrated.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 02.07.11 09:43 UTC
A week before the due date is when breeders I know in USA have their bitches X-rayed as you can clearly see the skulls and spines on x-ray and this way they know how many pups are likely (though you do occasionally hear of an extra being born that was hidden).

So you coudl do this or simply have to wait it out and have your vets number on speed dial if they are needed.

You positively musn't get frustrated!  All your anxieties will be picked up by your bitch.  She doesn't need your stress right now.  You will know for sure in a week anyway!  :-)   I've had bitches who didn't look pregnant, and pups moved down from the ribcage the day before whelping.

So chill!!!!!!  :-)

59 days and not even a breast milk, soo confuse because there is no x-ray or scan in my area. should I give up on her having litters?
- By Goldmali Date 06.07.11 15:01 UTC
Some bitches don't get milk until after they've given birth.
- By ewobaba [gh] Date 09.07.11 17:14 UTC
62 days, no swollen belly.now I think there is nothing in there, after spending a good amount of money for mating and all. it's really frustrating .

That is how things go when you decide to breed from your dog as many members including myself have been disappointed more than once and travelled several hundred miles to the right stud and Mother Nature doesn't play ball.

Better luck next time. In your OP you only mentioned one mating it is best done at least twice 48 hours apart and at the right time in her cycle.

Was the stud proven?
- By ewobaba [gh] Date 09.07.11 18:50 UTC
Did it 8 may and 10 may, everything was ok with the Stud. I will try my luck next time
