I herbally worm mine which is also safe for use through pregnancy and have never had a worm infestation with any of my dogs since starting Verm X at the end of last year.  I have their poo tested regularly to check for eggs.

My question is that my girl who we think has missed (would be around 8 weeks pregnant now), has been passing tapeworm segments for about a week now.  I have had her poo tested and also one of my others as a "control".  Neither are showing egg counts.  Could this be to do with her maybe having been pregnant and absorbed?  Any ideas?

Seem to remember that worms live within the tissues of the dogs body and only become apparent in the poo when their numbers increase and you are right this does happen when a bitch is in whelp although it can occur at any time. However I think the tape worm lives in the intestine when adult the eggs being present in the muscle tissue and is picked up when eating muscle meat that is uncooked such as rabbit or rodent. So although it may be that your bitch was pregnant and has produced her own infestation from the eggs in her own tissues she may equally have eaten something infected.

I think it is only the canine round worm that is affected and made active by pregnancy tape worm is ingested.

I think you may be right Brainless because they are the ones that reside in the muscle - think tape worm lives in the gut. Would think the reason the OP does not find round worm eggs in the poo is because they are in the muscles of the dog which probable means that the tape worm has just been picked up in something the dog has eaten.

I see, I've always been slightly unsure about how the worms thing works whilst they are pregnant.  She is the only one of my 5 (so far) who has produced these tapeworm segments.  Probably just coincidence with her having been mated then.

Interesting info HEREon the connection between FLEAS and Tapeworm transmission in dogs - absolutely fascinating and revolting
