Ok, just to remind, I have a 9month old yellow lab, and I'm quite worried. I do a lot of traveling and love taking my dog. The problem is, when I have a window open in my pickup, she insists on trying to jump out when we're stopped. I haven't had it open when we were moving in worry that she might jump out. I do have a back window that opens, and have opened that for her. Generally, she doesn't attempt to jump out that one, but she does try to get into the bed once in awhile. Luckly it is winter, so I can leave the windows up, but I'm afraid when summer comes around, something may happen. Is there anything I can do, to get her to understand she can only leave when I open the door?

You can restrain her with a harness that you can attach to the seatbelt so she can't jump out the window or you can buy purpose built plastic grills that fit over an partially open window and are adjustable so that the window can be open for ventilation etc... but the dogs can't get through them.
My dogs are not allowed to jump straight out of the car when the door is open. They have to wait until I tell them they can get out whether the door is open or not. That is safer in case someone opens the door by mistake or it may not be convenient for them to just jump straight out!

Get a car harness for her and restrain her. Don't give her a choice before she hurts herself.

My Staffie - Tess was always really restless in the car, but since we got a harness for her she sits in the back looking out of the window or lies straight down to sleep. I cant believe the change! A lot less stressfull for me and hubby.

Get her a harness!!!! Or at least a clip that goes from the seatbelt to a harness. Batzi.com sells them for mail order. They work great. (don't use a regular buckle neck collar)
The problem with the plastic grills that will pop onto the window is that if you have a rubber seal or a window that slopes along a curve, it's not guaranteed to fit properly to stay in the window. They best work with a rectangular/square shaped window. I had a Dakota truck and the blasted things never worked for them :(

either get a window grill, the sort you wind up in the top of the window, or put dog in back of pick up!

Just as a warning, Some years ago my friend lost her Flatcoat through that. The dog broke it's back!

No Sam, Jumping through the window of a moving car!!!
Incidently, My father, back in the 1930's used to carry his old dog around in the sidecar of his old Norton outfit. He said the dog only ever jumped out once, After that he learned his lesson and never tried again!!!!

ah right...yes an open window/moving car/loose dog combination is an accident waiting to happen in my opinion.

He was an old collie type Jackie this was before I was born. He died very shortly after I was born which, what with food rationing led to us not having another dog until I was 12 by which time we had progressed to an elderly Morris 8!!!
Best wishes, John
