Topic Dog Boards / General / KC - shocked!!

A freind of mine knowns someone (not a freind of theirs I may add just an aquaintance) that has a bitch who has had 4 litters she is 6 years old. These people are your typical pet owner trying to make money out of a family pet, they cant be called breeders. This poor bitch had a litter last year around August/September time which they registered with the KC online. They mated her 'AGAIN' on her next season, she now has another litter which they have somehow managed to also get registered with the KC???

They did the registration by post..as I am guessing if they had of done it online it would have not let them, but quite clearly someone at the KC has not bothered checking this bitches litter history. I cant help wondering how many other bitches litters have been registered who have been mated on consequtive seasons I am quite frankly shocked by this information..I know this person has all the paperwork as my friend went and had a nose to see if she was telling the truth.

I really feel like contacting the KC and giving them my thoughts on this, but I doubt they will bother doing anything about it now as this person has all the paperwork.

Unfortunately unless they are Accredited Breeders or Licensed Breeders, the KC will register two litters per year to a bitch, so sadly even if you did report it they wouldn't do anything about it.

When you say litters what size were they?  I have a girl here who has had two litters and had two in each one.  Medium breed whose average litter is 7, so I must say I was slightly tempted after her having her second litter of her having another one after the next season but decided not to.  It's actually two years in November since she had her last litter and haven't mated her since but I definitely was thinking of it.

Not saying that the above are good breeders in any way but there are always different reasons why some people might do this.

True, have even heard of Vets advising back to back litters for the good of a bitch so one never knows unless one is in on the plans and condition of the bitch in question.

Jackie when you say for the good of the bitch can you expand on why ? :-)

i remember a labradoodle breeder in aussie saying they did back to back litters untill the bitch had 6 litters then spayed and went to a pet home. she said it was so they went to their forever pet home quicker! what utter tosh

Ha! I bet she said it with a straight face too. Where in her wildest dreams could she ever think any bitch should have 6 litters, whether done over 3-4 years or 8yrs. Poor dogs!

Jackie when you say for the good of the bitch can you expand on why ? :-)Have no idea it was a vet that said it - do know though that if the litter is small or dead the vet will advise that breeding at the next season will do no hard at all. Think in the case where bitches have phantoms or other hormonal problems the vets think that to have a litter or to spay is the best way to go but I have no scientific knowledge to support or dispute this.

Ah ok that is a bit clearer ! Thanks

The  litter this bitch had last year I think she had about 8 or 9 pups she is a medium breed. This current litter I think she had 5 pups and two died. since when has it been ok to breed a bitch on consequtive seasons?? I understand the reasoning if maybe a bitch only had 1 or 2 pups in a litter previously and she is in good health and fully recovered  from such a small litter that she would be ok to have another litter on her next season but its certainly something I would never dream of doing. I thought the KC rules were that there had to be 12 months in-between each litter when did this change?

Years and years ago. The trouble was, you had instances where a bitch might have been mated a year after her previous litter and then gave birth one or two days before the full 12 months was up, hence the rule being changed.

If the bitch is 6 years old then 4 litters in say four years would not be excessive, though more than most of us would breed if the litters were a decent size.

They certainly won't be able to register any more litters from this bitch after January the 1st 2012, as that will be the maximum allowed after that date.

They can still breed and sell them though, even if they can't register them. There never will be a way to stop the unscrupulous, money-oriented , greedy "breeders".

Sadly, the KC will do nothing about it. I have reported a Labrador breeder breeding from 2 bitches with only 5 months between litters. Not interested. Also a Golden Retriever having 15!!! pups and then another 11 with a 7 month period between the 2 litters. Not interested. Sadly it is not only some breeders who are money hungry IMO.

Can never understand why this rule had to be 12 months or nothing - I would have thought changing it to 9 or 10 months would have served the purpose and avoided the problem that some breeders had.

I think it should have stayed at 12 months but where like if you want a litter off a bitch at 8 years you had to ask the kC for permission and only given in special circumstances.

Fully agree -10 or 11 months I'd say.

That is how it was when the breeding and sale of dogs Welfare Act first came in, but I think they were finding that there were so many requests that they couldn't deal with them in a timely manner so they changed it.
