It's far too common I'm afraid. People just don't realize how dangerous it can be.

Hubby and I went out on Saturday afternoon and 2 of my dogs were in our dining room, (or what should be a dining room but is full of dog beds). It has huge patio doors and no windows but I left the door to the kitchen open and the kitchen window. When we got back a couple of hours later I peeked in through the lounge windows as I always do to see what the dogs are up to. The 2 in the lounge were asleep on the settees but the 2 in the dining room were panting like mad! I don't think Ive moved so fast in my life. When I went through the lounge into the dining room it was stiflingly hot and the sun hadn't even reached round to the back of the house properly by that time. Another hour and I would have had a couple of sick dogs on my hands. Cue a swift run up to Argos and a blackout blind installed. God I felt so guilty.

My dogs beds are all in our conservatory which is where they all sleep at night but due to the heat in the day lately they have all taken to sleeping and hanging out in the lounge as the conservatory is a bit like a greenhouse at times!

some idiot teenagers were sunbathing in the centre of our park the other day and with them lying in the heat was a golden lab. it obv didnt have the sense to go 50 yards to a shady tree because it wanted to stay by the owners. i bet the poor thing was sunstroke that day. anyone sensible would have laid near the tree so their dog could sit under the shade, whats wrong with these youngsters have they no common sense?

My dogs love the sun, they follow it round the floor in the living room and they squeeze up against the fence as it starts to come round the back of the house...we have to force them to come into the cool house. The back garden is like a suntrap...too hot for us to sit out in, so definitly to hot for the dogs.

Good on you for drawing attention to the poor dog.

I notice mine disengage from their normal Velcro behaviour when it's really hot, you can find them all lying on the cold tiles of the bathroom floor. I try to avoid any lengthy car trips but always pack plenty of water for them just in case.

I just cannot understand the mentality of anyone to leave a dog in the car in this hot weather as its just a form of cruelty in my book and these people should be punished hard.
I was in sainsburys last week and a poor dog was puffing and panting in the car while its owner was in an air conditioned shop...as I was leaving my car they returned and I said your dog was getting distressed and she said oh he is fine and more or less telling me to mind my own business in around about way.
When will people learn.

I was really annoyed as this dog could of died, and is unnessary suffering,no windows were open either, but that would not of helped anyway, there is a law now reguardind dogs in hot cars and guess what,I would of broke the window if I would of had to.

Having been in the unfortunate situation of seeing dogs cooking in hot cars in the past couple of weeks, I would advise phoning the police. They seem to take this very seriously and turn up fairly quickly for dogs in hot cars. It's not a 999 call but 0845 0454545 will get response. The police said that they treat it as causing unnecessary suffering to an animal. The police will call the Dog Warden and/or the RSPCA and get a response which we probably wouldn't. Please don't ignore these poor dogs left to suffer by ignorant, selfish owners.
Incidentally, at a local tea room, people were sitting outside in full sun with their cooking dogs. They were enjoying their cream teas and didn't care about their dogs suffering and one of these was a quite elderly Golden with a very profuse coat. Are they ignorant or selfish?

I wouldn't say they were selfish, they probably weren't unaware of the harm they are doing. Like those who walk their dogs in the midday heat or leave them in hot cars whilst nipping to tesco etc I wouldn't imagine it's a selfish thought just that they didn't realise just how hot it can become.
Maybe some form of advertising should be put out in newspapers & on TV to show just how the heat affects the dog & how the heat can rapidly build up in a car.

I would say its common sense not to leave dogs in cars during hot weather,it was advertised last year how hot a car becomes and it can take only a short time for a dog to die, a policeman left 2 GS in his van last year, they died,he lost his job and was taken to court,

Actually he didn't lose his job, unfortunately. Losing his job would have been nothing to his dogs losing their lives.

Yes you are right, it is common sense.......but common sense seems to be lacking lately

what really amazes me is the amount of dogs left in cars at dog shows.....these exhibitors and most of them are should be banned from showing !!!!!
