Can anyone help with rather basic advice about worming my girl? She was wormed several times by the breeder, and I have wormed her once with Drontal when she was about 12 weeks.
I occasionally see what look vaguely like rice grains in her droppings but IJ'm not sure if I am imagining this!
She has been bringing back some water a lot lately after she has drunk, with clear "mucus", don't know if thart sounds like a symptom?
I am sure my vet has told me what to do but i have a shocknig memory.
By the way she is now nearly 6 months and seems healthy generally.

Symtoms are definately a bit wormish Lindsay. The "Rice" could be worm segments. I'm not sure if Drontal is a "Total" wormer or not so it may pay to have a chat to your vet. (Some wormers don't clear Tape worm)

Drontal Plus is a total wormer. Our vet told me not to use it until she was 6 months plus, but another vet in the surgery gave it to a 16 week old dog.
HI 9thM
Hmm, interesting what you were told about Drontal PLus, I wonder if that is what i was given? I was told it was "Drontal" - perhpas there is a Drontal and a Drontal Plus (and maybe even a Drontal Maximus LOL :) )
I'll have a chat with the vet anyway to clarify, thanks very much.
Best wishes

I've done some smurfing and I think it's probably the same thing. It is a wormer for round and tape worms, but most of the vets sites seemed to recommend panacur granules until the dog was at least six months old.
Could it be that you're not giving her enough? My gundog trainer wormed her cat religiously and one day only had dog wormer so gave her cat that and it sicked a 2 foot tapeworm onto the living room carpet.

I think I gave her enoough as she was weighed at the vets and I was given the Drontal accordingly; the story of the 2ft tapeworm has given me the shivers!!!! Eeeeek!!

When my parents used to work in Bull Terrier kennels, there was another kennel maid there who, still to this day, can't eat spaghetti after seeing one of the dogs pass a whole load of worms after being wormed. Just thought I'd share that with you :D
Oh Gawd, thanks!!!!! And I like spaghetti too!!
lindsay

there is drontal puppy liquuid is very convenient in use as the dosage is just given as a single dose per puppy, which i give at 3,5,7,week then every two weeks untill 3months.there is heart worm which the worms are in the heart and may be in the lungs, you must go to the vet for check,
HI John
Thanks for that advice, I feel rather embarrassed at not knowing what to do. I will ring the vet today and ask about the Drontal and so on; maybe get an appointment.
HOw is "The Flower" by the way?

Never feel embarrassed Lindsay, we all know what to do about "The other" dog but like everyone else, if "The Flower" is sick I just go to pieces!
My little Flower's doing fine at the moment thanks, the season has started so she is busy bringing me Pheasants! Roast Pheasant Sandwiches make it almost a joy going to work at this time of year!
Best wishes, John
Oh you're so right John, it's always different when it's our own isn't it <g>.
Glad to hear little Flower's well, make sure you watch the old cholesterol level with those pheasant sandwiches nowJohn :)
Take care

I thought game was naturally low in cholesterol? My father in law was gutted when his doctor advised game and venison (but not duck)! Wild reared animals (duck, geese, pheasant, venison) are naturally much lower in fat than their commercially reared counterparts.

Your right 9th ...Game is extremely healthy .. people don't realise what they are missing out on!! :-) Then again, the health benefits are probably out~weighed by the copious amounts of alcohol that tend to accompany it...lol
Have never ate a pheasy sandwich, love a stir fry though ...lol
I have just bought a new freezer for the garage and am collating recipes and investigating suitable vino, as we speak 9th :D
Gawd, I'm hungry now ! *tut*

We've got duck and pheasant in the freezer from a Corporate day. Our shoot seems to have amazing disappearing pheasants - they're always there when you fill the hoppers or go dogging in. But come shoot day, there's never a feather to be seen!
Luckily, Al has a few other Corporate days lined up, so we'll manage to get a few bits for the freezer.
But, how can a thousand pheasants disappear? Wish their bills would.

It's quite a coincidence this worm query has cropped up, because I've been having similar trouble (or at least my 5 month pup has) this past week. He retched one morning and I noticed an inch long, very skinny worm. I also noticed there was a lot of mucus in his stools, and the next day I noticed the same type of worms again in his stools. I was a bit surprised, to say the least, as every month I have been administering some special drops (one drop between the shoulder blades...can't remember the name of the product, but it's fairly new on the market) that kill mites and several types of worms. I took my pup to the vet who prescribed a special powder to be taken over three days, as he wasn't old enough for the drontal tablets. On the third day after gving him this course of treatment, I noticed lots of similar live worms in his stools again(the vet said he would pass dead ones). I'm starting to tear my hair out as I'm worried the worms will cause internal damage. So it's off to the vets again! I didn't realise worms were so difficult to get rid of, as I never had any problems like this with my older dog! Are there any reliable homeopathic remedies for killing worms in pups on the market?
From another worried pup owner!
HI Nicola
There is a new one on the market, it was advertised in Dogs Today I think, and I THINK it was from Stock Nutrition but can't be sure.
It's in teresting that health-wise, the worms that cause trouble (toxo-whatsit) have to be in optimum conditions (ie. in a pile of faeces) for 14 days before they can cause harm.
So the likelihood of anyone getting infected is very rare as the temperature has ot be at a certain level and so on. But obvilusy it means that old dog poo is worse than fresh.
Whoops sorry, I'm rambling now!!!
I am going to get rid of the worms with the Drontal etc and then will do it homeopathically later on.
Will you let us know how you get on?

Hi, I'm getting worried now!! It sounds like the drop on is Stronghold, which I think is the only drop on that "does" mites. I have been using this monthly on my 5 month puppy, who does not seem to be "doing" as well as most puppies I run on.
She has been on Arden Grange + little puppy chum, but now I am considering moving over to more of a BARF type diet in an attempt to improve her condition. |Now I'm worried that it may just be that the Stronghold isn't worming her properly. In the light that the most popular liquid wormer is giving problems for some young puppies, and now I read that the major competitor Drontal has had some poorly puppies after worming - What on earth to we use, to make sure our dogs are as worm free as possible without making them ill!! This is why I had started using the Stronghold!! Now I'm wondering whether it is working, though I have never seen worms in her poo and she doesn't look wormy, it seems she just has a small appetite. She turned her nose up at fresh chicken today!! I have used Drontal+ on my 12month+ adults with apparent success, and still use this on them twice a year to take care of any possible tapeworms - as the Stronhold does not cover tapeworm. I have never had any probs with the Drontal tablets with adults. But what would anyone suggest I worm my next baby litter with?? Garlic !!!??? Only joking!! Has anyone had probs with Drontal or Panacur pastes?

I should have reported back earlier but the worm problem appears to have disappeared. I used the powder given by the vet, as mentioned earlier, over three days, but on the third day I still found live worms. In addition to this, I had one course of Stronghold left and administered this on the fourth day, as this was due anyway. The worms and the mucusy, runny stools disappeared overnight. I will keep an eye on things, but maybe the drops just didn't last quite long enough and maybe it was a combination of the powder and drops that finally did the trick. I've never had this problem before, so was at a bit of a loss. I'm unsure whether to continue with the Stronghold (would like to look into more homoeopathic methods of mite and worm control), but a lot of breeders speak well of it judging by postings elsewhere on this board, and my vet recommends it. However, it just didn't work this time around for my pup, at first, but then seemed to clear up the problem with the next course, maybe with the help of the powder. My pup now seems in good health and is doing well. By the way, what do tape worms look like??

Thanks for that Leigh, velly interestink!! Do you know if we can get it in this country, if not can it be ordered from the US without a prescription? Have you used it yourself or know anyone that has?

No WL, I found it when I was looking for *worms* info for Nicola :-) I thought I might look into it too. I will have a dig round later and see if I can come up with any more details.
Leigh x

From the descriptions it sounds more like Whip worms, which I have heard are harder to get rid of as most of the wormers don't touch them. a friend had a bitch whose condition she was unhappy with, and she was diagnosed with these. She was an adult, and was prescribed a higher dose of Drontal.

I looked on the web page that Leigh kindly provided (not to be viewed on a full stomach!) and thought the worms my pup had looked like round worms. However, there was a lot of mucus threaded with blood and quite pink looking, which seemed to fit the symptoms for the presence of the Whip Worms. However, it has cleared up now (touch wood) but I will keep a close eye on things. I may well go for a Drontal tablet for him next time around.
