My girl has been panting for 2 days now. She has delivered a bag of water (which is good) and it is still hanging. How long before I need to start panicing?

If you are sure there is no pup in the sac them break it and gently pull it out, leave if it won't budge as it will come out with the first pup.
What is Mum doing? If she is relaxed then fine it could be a couple of hours before a pup arrives, only allow her to actively push for an hour with no progress before contacting the vet.
Keep us posted

I have done this a million times before but never been waiting like this. Bag has been out for about half hour. No pushing yet just panting.
Im not bothered about out of hours costs etc but obviously prefer to do it at home naturally.
Definately no puppy in it. Wont pull and I havent popped it.

I won't either, and I've whelped a lot of bitches over the years. I guess, to a certain extent, how long you wait does depend on breed. With my present toy breed I would only wait 40-45 minutes once the bag was showing. If your girl is panting and not pushing I would be concerned about inertia. I can usually see this in their eyes. They have a far away, pained, glazed look. Best I can describe it.

Umm she had been quite a while now and 2 days panting is also long not unheard of but long I think Sophie was panting for about 2 hours before she whelped, and all 11 were born in a 3 hour window. This is where you need a mentor within your breed who has done this all before and would be able to spot any warning signs, even if you have done it before another perspective always helps. personally I wouldn't leave it much longer as unless she has a pup now she has been a long time.

Hope that she managed to whelp now. Maybe if you took her in the car to the vet it will have got her started. I only wait an hour after this happening myself.

Hopefully this will get things going :)

In what way does she look rough?
Some bitches do take a long time to whelp esp if they are unfit (not saying yours is unfit) but if you think she doesn't look right as she is your bitch and you know her id see the vet. You say she looks chilled has the contractions and panting stopped?
Fingers crossed you have a litter by the morning, and this is all a distant memory.

She is actually prob my fittest dog. Why i paniced I dont know done this many times before lol But each one is different.
back home from vets. Had some oxy delivered number 1 and 2 since we got back. She doesnt have visible contractions or push they just literally come. She hasnt got a clue but slowly I think the maternal instincts are kicking in. But looking at the size of her there are a lot more to come so I will still be here in the morning.
Think we are having a little rest now. She deserves it :)
Just caught up with this thread - hope all has continued well throughout the night.
Please update when you can.

Hope everything is ok.

Spoken like a BYB.
Your bitches welfare is your number one priority. And you need to know about things like inertia long before a bitch is in labour.

Sorry - I interpreted that comment as referring to "Vets Now", i.e the chain???

How is she doing today? I hope Mum and pups are doing well.
No one likes lining the vets pockets but when we choose to breed from our dogs then we take the bad with the good and get them assistance and care when required.
To be fair the OP did intimate the health of her bitch outweighed the vet costs.

Yes, I read that to be the only vets available (Vets Now) and that they were unreasonably expensive.
But what ever I hope things are OK and the OP is taking a rest.
meme99 - please update us on what's been happening with your girl - I hope she's ok

Sorry its been so long......but been so busy......
She had 9!! All healthy!!
Went to the vet at about 12.30am had a shot of oxy, penicillin and calcium and the first pup was born. The rest were delivered at home naturally, last one at 8.15am. All and mum are doing well.
In reply to suggestions that I put my finances before my dogs welfare that is definately not true. i would just sooner see my own vet who knows us and think that vets now are just out to rip people off when other vets can provide the same service (if not better) at a lot lower price.
as for inertia - I know about puppies getting stuck etc just never heard that term for it before - but tbh we are ALL learning new things all the time and Im sure no one knows EVERY term even after years of experience.
Anyway..... thank you all for all your support. Will let you know how the puppies get on.
I am supplementing them by bottle feeding with there being so many and giving calcium just to hopefully prevent eclampsia.
So pleased all arrived safe and well - I had been thinking the worst when you didn't respond - obviously you've been very busy.
Well done mum and I hope you enjoy the litter
