Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / RIP Ruby, warning for all.

My world has just been shattered into a thousand pieces.

Bit of background first.
Ruby had her 2nd and last litter 5 mths ago. Oxytocin given as usual day after whelping. No complications (other than mastitis) until 7 days ago. A week ago she went a little bit quiet. And I mean only slightly, she was still eating, drinking and toileting normally but was lying on the settee a bit more but it was very hot so I put it down to that. Then she perked up and was playing with everyone again. 3 days ago she threw up bile but was still eating/drinking fine. Sunday night ran downstairs throwing up food on her way. Monday (yesterday) had an ultrasound which detected lesions in both uterine horns. Booked in for spaying and blood tests this morning (tuesday). She dropped a massive amount of weight within 3 days.

Had the phonecall to say that her kidneys were in complete failure and way too far gone. Her uterine horns were scarred and lesions and must have had an extremely low grade infection for a long time. She had been playing completely normally and has had 3 routine check-ups since her pups, (day after whelping, 8 weeks after and 12 weeks after) and never registered a temperature. Neither did she have a temperature yesterday or today.

RIP my baby girl.

Thankyou for you support. Ive been in shock all day. Had the heating on full belt and still shivering. The my vet said it is most likely to be the tiniest bit of fluid or tissue left over from whelping causing irritation to her uterus resulting in a very low grade infection causing the scarring and lesions.

I got a copy of her blood results...

Phosphorous - (normal levels 0.94 - 2.13)  Ruby's 6.46
Creatinine - (normal levels 27 - 124) Ruby's 856
Calcium - (normal levels 2.15 - 2.95) Ruby's 1.53
Blood urea nitrogen - (normal levels 2.5 - 8.9)  Ruby's 64.3

Everything else was in range.

I just can't imagine how you feel at the moment - I'm so terribly sorry for your loss.  Run free at the Bridge Ruby.

Your story is almost unbelievable - a lesson for us all to seek veterinary advice if you feel something isn't right with your dog.

Thinking of you.....

Well it's the morning after and I'm not doing so good. Neither is her 5 and a half month old daughter. She howled for a couple of hours before settling last night and keeps pottering around the house and outside. I'm a nervous wreck during pregnancy, whelping and rearing the litter but once the pups have gone and she had her 12 week check I completely relaxed and breathed a big sigh of relief that mum and pups came through it happy and healthy. I never in a million years expected complications this long after whelping. I will never breed again.
- By Ells-Bells [gb] Date 08.06.11 07:40 UTC
I'm sure you're still in a state of shock.  Her daughter must be so confused as she'll have no idea as to what has gone on.

I, like you relax after puppies have gone to their new homes and mum starts to put on weight and look less tired etc.  It must be such a rare complication as no-one else yet has posted having a similar problem.

I don't think anything anyone says to you can help you not feel a sense of blame for breeding from Ruby, but I'm sure she could not have had better treatment/care.  Perhaps other members can post their feelings after losing a bitch due to whelping problems and how they coped with the grief and guilt feelings.

I hope you have lots of people to support you in your time of need.

Im so very sorry for your loss. Ive been making my mind up whether it would be helpful to you for me to post on here and hope it is. I, too lost my lovely girl last November 6 days after whelping one pup. She was only 2 and we had planned this litter for over a year. She had brilliant health tests, 0/0 hips etc and massive potential for a wonderful agility career. Like your girl, she seemed to be in perfect health during her pregnancy, we were a little disappointed that her scan showed only one pup but we liaised with the vet and had a game plan for any possible problems this might cause during the whelping. She whelped without problems but never regained her appetite afterwards even though she had eaten everything and anything up until the day before whelping. Worried about this, she was checked over 2 days after whelping by the vet who said he didnt think there was anything major going on as she looked so well, shiny coat, no temperature, good weight, plenty of milk etc. 2 days later, still not eating so put on a drip, x-rayed and blood tests which horrifically showed total kidney failure with much the same levels as your girls (memory still a bit hazy about the actual figures but I remember them being very high). Medication didnt help and we lost her 2 days later. I am still devastated by her loss and, like you, cannot stop blaming myself for putting her through it. I will never breed again. Like you, I thought Id done everything I could to safeguard my girl but it still wasnt enough.  I totally understand the shock and disbelief you feel that this could happen to such an outwardly healthy, happy dog but I hope you get some comfort from having a little bit of her still in her daughter as I do with my girl's son (he was fostered for 6 weeks by a wonderful breeder who had just had a litter of her own, and it was very emotional bringing him home).  I just wanted to say you are not alone, sadly, in this dreadful situation.
