Tomorrow i will be submitting my application for a kennel name, assuming that one from my choices gets initially approved, how long will it take to be granted so that i can use it?
I had planned to do this in plenty of time but due to unforseen circumstances my litter plans have moved forward, my bitch is due in season in the next week or so, any chance it will be done by the time i have to register them? As i would obviously prefer it to be at the front of the name rather than end.
Also, would it cause problems if, when it is granted, i submit the paperwork for it to be added to my bitches name? Does my bitch have to carry the kennel name for the pups to have it as their prefix?
thanks

Many years ago I applied for my kennel name at the same time as registering a litter having checked that I could do so with the Kennel Club. The registration merely remained in abeyance until the name procedure had all gone through. It may be worth asking the Kennel Club is this is still possible.
Of course the registration documents were not available to the new owners for several months but I don't remember anyone having a problem with that. I can't see why anyone would as you would not normally enter a show, for instance, until the puppy is 6 months old.
Of course, these days, you would be obliged to put in writing that the documents will be forwarded as soon as received and, of course, they can easily check with the KC that registration has been applied for.
>Does my bitch have to carry the kennel name for the pups to have it as their prefix?
No, but I seem to remember I had my bitches name changed during the whole procedure as well.

When I applied for my affix 6'ish years ago, I sent off the paperwork, had the positive reply back in a couple of weeks, was told in would be in the next month's Gazette, so needed to wait till the end of that month, then it would be ok to use it, so I think max 2 months from start to finish.
I applied to change my girls' names (added the affix to the end) during the month that we were waiting to see that no objections were raised and they went ahead and changed them. If there had been objections they would have automatically changed them back.
I would think for sure you'll have plenty of time to have it sorted before you register them unless something unforseen comes up.
No - the bitch doesn't have to have the name attached to her in order to register the pups with your affix. But you have to make sure the same owners names are on the bitch as are registered to your affix. For example my affix is in both mine and my husband's names and the girls are all registered in both our names. If it had only been one or the other of us on their registrations we would have had to have registered separate interests in the affix once approved in order to register pups. I hope that made sense.

Thankyou both, that is very helpful. I'm sure if it isnt complete by the time the pups go to new homes it wont matter since the pups are going to go to working homes to people i know within the sport personally and cant compete until 18 months anyway.
Out of interest, if you have pups that you know are going to go to competition/show homes, do you allow owners to have much say in the registered names?
Blimey, i'm asking all these questions and she hasnt even been mated yet!!!

I haven't bred dogs, just cats, and when I did so, it wasn't customary to have a waiting list before breeding. So any that were booked before registration, I was perfectly happy if the owners came up with something they wanted. Strangely, decades later, those that chose the names for their own kittens are the ones I remember the most. I didn't have themes or consecutive alphabet registrations, but once I did specify a letter of the alphabet and I was quite surprised and pleased by what the new owners came up with.

I've only bred one litter and about to breed my second. I have a litter theme, and choices within the theme, so for the first litter I had the name I wanted, then gave the others a few options to choose from so each one chose the one they wanted.
I have the same planned for this litter, and they will have a lot of options to choose from.
Out of interest, if you have pups that you know are going to go to competition/show homes, do you allow owners to have much say in the registered names?Only if they are very good friends and will stick to the letter I'm at. For one breed I also stick strictly to names that are song titles, for the other I'm a bit more lax, but it has to be the right letter. On the other hand, when I can I try to pick the name that suits the buyer, when I know who it is at the time of registration.
I applied for mine last year and my first choice was picked and all paper work was back within 2 weeks.
Any current dogs of yours can be ____their kennel name_____ at/of/with/over/ect ______your kennel name here___
Any dogs you breed of course will be ___your kennel name___ their kennel club name.
Good luck and I hope your first choice is picked.
> I hope your first choice is picked
I understand from friends that this can be the most time consuming bit and I
think there is a way to enquire about your preferred name choices first. Perhaps someone on here can explain how that bit works.
I've bought 2 dogs for show, from the same breeder, and both times we were allowed to pick our own name. She prefers to keep her names very simple though so we didn't have themes to worry about but our first dog did need a name beginning with Y
I really hope your first choice is accepted. Sadly it took me two years to get a kennel name that wasn't already taken, in the end it was a simple whim then a suggestion from a worker at the kennel club that I got mine.
I believe on the kennel club website there is now a name checker??? not entirely sure if it checks kennel names only or if its just dog names.
I was a bit like you, bitch came into season early and it was my last chance, my final application was in the August but I had missed the September deadline by a day so it had to go in the October gazette. Pups were born near end of October, I know the new kennel name didn't have to be added to the dam/sire but I wanted it to appear on the pups pedigree, so when they were born I added the name then a week or two after I registered the pups *kennel name + pups name*, all paperwork arrived fine and the pups pedigree have their parents names listed as 'at our kennel'

Thanks, yes iv'e looked on the kennel club websites name checker, it doesnt check kennel names but just actual names, but I have been typing my choices of kennel name into the "registered name" box and ive tried a few well known kennel names and each time it is coming up with " *such and such* is already an active kennel name" ... so ive tried my choices in there and it is saying they are ok, so fingers crossed they are.
I'm just about to submit my online application but am a bit nervous in case i change my mind!!!

I couldn't sleep the other night so was checking out possible puppy names on the KC site and was refused one as the word I put in after my Affix was someones affix, didn't think this possible, I knocked a letter off the word and it was accepted.
Good luck with getting your choice, I got my first choice.
I was told not to waste my money on the book of affixes as it is out of date by the time it goes to the printers every 3 months as the new ones are granted every day not just once per quarter as in the past.
I have known of one person be granted theirs, the waiting time had passed and she started getting it added to her dogs when someone objected as it was very close to one no longer in use but protected by the brteed club, she had to start all over again.
it has taken us 12 attempts to get a name, all the ones we wanted were either taken or too close to other kennel names.
Finally we received our certificate, but cannot use the name until it has been in the kennel club gazette, which isn't until july and then the general population can object if they wish within 6 weeks. So we won't be official for about 9 weeks.
I hope nobody objects because we are really excited about it.

Oh dear, i am really struggling! I still have not submitted it online. I have come up with three names but cant seem to think of any more! Really want to submit six so as not to delay anything. It's not as easy as i thought it would be!

I too struggled after the first 3 and got help from a breed specific forum and taking the first letters RHO added

Thanks, I have submitted it now...I wont say what i have put but I have used part of my breed name and a word added.."border*****" as my first and second choice, then chose some words i like translated into foreign languages. To be honest though, i will be gutted if my first or second choices get rejected! I did as much research as i could, googled and checked the kc site, so really really hoping it gets accepted.

I hope you get the one you want.
I made a list of about 20 before picking my favourite 6 from the list and didn't really have a favourite among the six. As it was I got my 2nd choice.

Wooooop!!!! Ok, that may be a little premature but I emailed the kc this morning (i know, im soo impatient!) asking about my kennel name, they said it will be checked either today or tomorrow. I have (dont laugh ;) ) also been checking daily by typing my first choice kennel name into the name checker...it has always said "does not conflict" whereas this afternoon it comes up with " there was a problem, *********** is an active kennel name". I am REALLY hoping this means its mine (subject to objections)...first choice too..

fingers crossed for you :)

I did that as well and got that message about 3 days after applying so it does sound like you've got your first choice :-)

Oh well done, sounds promising!
I have a name in mind that I'd LOVE to register as a kennel name even though I don't intend to breed, and have no registered dogs at the moment/ I would be crazy to do it I guess, but if I can't have that name I'd be happy without one (or to wait years til I foudn something I wanted just as much). Just wish there was a way to apply, then if I can't have the name I want, get my money back.

If you go onto the kennel club website and select online services > name check ...if you then write in the the lower box (not the prefix box) the name you want then it tells you if it conflicts or not, thats how i did it... it requires two words so i just wrote in *kennel name* *my* ("my" just so it added the second word needed) i know it isnt definate but gives you an idea whether it is taken.
> If you go onto the kennel club website and select online services
Have tried that ;) all comes up good, and have Googled it as well.... the only thing is that you can't tell if it's too close to an existing name or if someone will object to it (I understand that's why it's published in the Gazette).

woop :) all official now, still cant believe i got my first choice!

Well done!!!! :)

Are you going to share with us?
Just cannot help having a little gloat,I registered my prefix in 1967,and decided to invest in the "Compound for Life" option which was actually the price of a puppy at that time,so a big outlay, but one of my better decisions it was 10 guineas!!!! I wish I could pass it on to someone else, but done of my family want to bred or show, but I expect they would have to start paying for it anyway.I have certainly had my moneys worth.!

"borderforce" :)
thats a really nice kennel name, i was really lucky to get my first choice, even more so as it was a present from my parents they set it up for me and have said they will pay for it as long as i wish to carry on with it.
> expect they would have to start paying for it anyway.
Yes if you change it then that's right. My friend and mentor had hers since 1953 and when she added her husband in the 1980's had to start paying the annual fee.
