Hi, was just wondering if any of you use fresh frozen goats milk for mother and pups? I have a bitch on day 52 and I intend using it when she has had her pups and also when weaning them.

I normally just buy it from the shop but I have been told that fresh is best.

Thanks

i only bought fresh goats milk once luckly the pups were five weeks old so when they got the runs they were old enuogh to copy with it, turned out one of the goats had mastitis and being fresh unpasteruised milk they bugs were still in the milk and made the pups sick change back on to the goats milk fresh from asda and had no other issues and have raised four other litters on goats milk from supermarkets with no problems if it had been the next litter bitch had no milk for 36 hours we would have lost the lot, so fresh from the goat might be better but you are taking risks with it

Thanks for the advice.

So would it be better to let it defrost and then boil it up and let cool or would that make no difference.

I buy fresh, pasteurised whole goat's milk (St. Helen's Farm) from Tescos.  Morrisons, Asda, Sainsburys and Booths all sell it so have not had the need to buy it frozen for over 25 years.  I wouldn't use anything else when weaning pups. I never use cow's milk.

I too have only used supermarket goats milk both fresh which I have frozen and long life, had no problems with either.

I use the supermarket goats milk too - I give it to the expectant Mums, then carry on with it after pups arrive.  I sue it for the pups at weaning time to mix puppy porridge up, and put a caton into the puppy packs at going away time too.

Think I will stick to buying it from the supermarket then lol! :-)

Fresh from the supermarket here too. Be prepared to buy quite a few cartons at a time. I used to freeze them & defrost for use the next day, that way I never ran out! No tummy problems and mum and pups loved it!

Thats what I normally do but was told the frozen fresh was better. Will just continue doing the normal.

We used to keep goats and the pups were started early on raw milk and the adult dogs used to drink it every day, no problems. The real pain was sterilising the milking equipment twice a day!

i lucky enough to have a friend who keeps goats. our pups are weaned on to it.far cheaper to buy  from her than the supermarkets.

:-)

My first ever Bearded Collie came from a lady that had goats.  Her husband travelled a long way to work, which happened to be close to me - she used to make him drop off goats milk for my puppy!
