Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Advice on shipping chilled/frozen semen

Hoping that there are some of  you who have experience of this and can advise...I was asked last year if I would consider sending my dog abroad, within Europe, to a well known kennel specialising in his breed, the idea being that they would make him up to ShCh, use him at stud and pay all his expenses. That didn't go anywhere because flattering though it is he won't be staying anywhere without me and he was far too young to know how he would turn out to consider him for stud purposes. So now we are nearly a year down the road, the dog has been hip scored and is awaiting gonioscopy. The same breeder has been in touch to see whether I would consider sending semen straws (they will pay all costs). Is this advisable, under what circumstances would you consider it and what arrangements do you make (e.g. do you specify the bitch on which they will be used, ????). Any advice gratefully received.

I'm in a similar situation with an American enquiry but my dogs 11 now so trying to find a company that will do this for us that has a good track record here in the UK.

Good luck

Hi Schip try these http://www.tweedhousevets.co.uk/reproduction-clinic/exporting-semen.shtml

I'm as much interested in the arrangements you make with the owner of the bitch as the logistics of shipping--this is all new to me and I don't know enough about it to make an informed decision.

Think we might differ in the fact that my boys semen is going to a friend in the USA who had him for 2 yrs for various shows and titles but now regrets not using him at stud due to his carrier status of a recessive gene imported to the UK from USA bloodlines.

All costs re collection, checking, freezing, shipping etc will be her's and depending on how much semen of quality they get as to stud fee.  He is an 11 yr old who has taken 2 yrs to become fertile again after the Superlorin implant, wouldn't recommend it for my breed thats for sure, he became agraphobic poor lad, so many things are up in the air for us at this stage.

Thanks for the link, I will let you know what/how we go all depends on vet checks for qaulity this end.  Wondering how you get the dry shipper back?
