Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / pup not maintaining weight

I have a pup small breed) which is not putting on weight like the rest of the litter. I have been making sure he gets his share by putting him on on his own. He puts on around 15 gms at each feed but he is just not keeping it on. He was around 180 gms at birth and is now 12 days old and weighing around 280 gms. His littermates are well over 400 gms now and were around 200 gms at birth. He sucles well and I have used puppystim. He will not suck from a bottle as I have tried to supplement with lactol. He seems a little limper too than the others. Any suggestions welcome.

Sometimes there is a smaller pup who suddenly gains weight when they are weaned , doing much better on solid food than Mums milk. But if you are concerned best get the vet to check him over.

i had the same problem mine are large beed but we took him to the vet when he was 10 to 12 days old & only weighed 1lb more or less what he was when he was born he advised us to give him some formula but weigh him every day if he did not start gaining weight we were to take him back he is now 4 wks old he weighs 2.5lbs his litter mates ar double that apart from 1 other that is slightly smaller, but he is getting on very well he plays with the others they are all on mushy food now started this wk & mum not really interested in feeding them now but they are alll veryyy contented so if i was you i would not worry tooo much(easier said than done) but just to put your mind at ease you could pop him to see your vet just to be on the safe side .good luck any way hope you have lots of fun with them just like we are xx

Hi
he is holding his own. He has hit the 300gm mark now. He is feeding OK on his own but I still put him on his own to make sure that he is not being done out. His eyes have opened this morning and he actually seems a bit livelier too.One of the pups is weighing an amazing 750 gms and the other 2 around the 650gm mark.I have never had this size difference before, mine are usually about the same weight. Will keep you updated. Thanks for asking about him.

hi glad to hear hes doing well my little fella will be 5 wks old friday he now weighs 3.5lb so he is gaining about 1lb a wk he is standing up to the others as well now,mum stopped feeding them at 3.5wks we have been weening them & paying more attention to little fella & another little boy not quite as small but they are managing the weaning very well.hope yours gets on as well.i have another little problem now though mum is losing her fur round the belly/top of leg area i think its hormones for having the puppies but have to keep an eye on her we have given her a cod liver oil capsule since 2 wks before mating her anyway dont think its much to worry about but have you any ideas of the reason why keep in touch

This is what every bitch does after a litter (hormonal moult), looses the coat down to virtually the skin, which is why in coated breeds it will be near on 6 months from the litter before they are fit to be shown again.

Hi, thats the little boy 3 weeks today. He is now weighing in at 430 grams. He seems to be fine but the others are so big in comparison. Thanks for your best wishes. It just helps when someone else has had the same experience. I will update again later. Thanks.

Hi,

My litter are 13 days old today and one of the puppies is half the size of the rest like yours. He is still suckling from mum, very active/strong, I'm topping him up every 2hours and he is putting weight on slowly. Nothing seems to be wrong with him apart from he's small... I've been worried sick for the passed 13 days, I've grown so attached to him. I was feeding him welpi to start off with but he wasn't putting any weight on and didn't really have much strength, so I found a recipe online and the results are fantastic! (Goats milk, whole yoghurt, egg yolk, sugar)...

Hope your little guy is ok. Keep us posted.
