Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Safest way to worm to pregnant bitch
- By JTHOM1 [gb] Date 31.05.11 18:40 UTC
Hi,
I am soon due to worm my pregnant bitch as she is 36 days pregnant at the moment.  I am not really happy about giving her Drontal and the  Panacur dose from 40 days to 2 days after whelp seems a really long dose.
Does anyone give Panacur differently over a shorter period or not worm at all until puppies are born.
Many thanks.x

I use Panacur as directed on the box, the dose daily is only a quarter of the adult normal dose

I saw pics once of what a pup passed when the dam hadn't been treated and wouldn't want that inside any pup of mine, it took ages to get her clear and thriving, the pup was being hand reared after being removed from her breeder

I agree with the advice already given.  I have used Panacur 10% for many years, from day 40 to 2 days post whelp.  Other makes that give less dosing, are not tiny doses like Panacur.  Remember that, although given daily, it is only 25% of a normal adult dose.  It works a treat on those encysted worms, and your pups will be born 98% worm free.  I wouldn't wait until puppies are born.

If you Panacur mum, all pups will have to do is go ahead and thrive (as opposed to carrying a heavy worm burden.)

Not worming at all until after pups are born is not an option for me.

There have been many recent threads on this forum and others about dangers of worming using Panacur - responsible breeders have had issues over using this wormer.  Drontal is less worrying - if you contact the manufacturer you'll be given the timing and dosage.  I have given panacur to pups following directions and had a problem with optic nerves not developing and I will only now use Drontal for pregnant bitches and for young pups.  Problems have been losing whole litters (fitting) and developmental issues in pups.

Yet I have had no issues for 7 generations of dogs and 6 generations of bitches wormed in whelp, 18 litters, only had problems of diarrhoea in two pups in one litter when give their second dose at 5 weeks.
