Topic Dog Boards / Health / Sick dog, eating grass
- By Lacy Date 28.05.11 17:34 UTC
After his meal last evening Lucas showed signs of discomfort & wanting to be sick, took him to the field opposite to eat grass which he did in large amounts & was sick twice.  Sick again numerous times since, then after talking to the vet this morning was asked to take him in as they thought he might have an obstruction. He wouldn't settle for an X ray without a GA, so it was decided to leave him and see how he gets on & to call them if we have any concerns. He is drinking, and shows no outward signs of discomfort, except that all he wants todo is eat grass. Has not been sick since early this morning - sorry to waffle (what's new) - my question is should I allow him to keep eating grass? He did pass a small amount this morning. Many thanks

Hi Lacy, hope Lucas is feeling a bit better by now. I wish I knew the answer re grass--I see mine are busy chomping away on sneaky mouthfuls whenever they get a moment, and as you say even though it's never been sprayed I'm not thrilled about it. They seem to just do it at the beginning of spring when the grass is fresh.

Vet thinks he could be impacted with lamb bone fragment. Did pass a little yesterday am, but nothing since very very lethargic today which we're hoping is due to metronidazole also on antepsin. Has kept a small meal down and stomach no longer gurgling. Looking drawn, will try and get him off sofa for short walk. Got the usual talk on feeding raw meaty bones, 'lamb splinters should be feeding chicken or beef', I'd always believed lamb ribs far better than most beef. Just have to keep everything crossed that he passes something soon or GA and X ray, did ask if he could have sedation but they were not keen, b...dy health and safety not allowing you to stay or even settle him before  X ray. Many thanks, Lacy

Don't like the sound of him Lacy, I'd have him back to the vet, if he is drawn and lethargic wouldn't be happy.

Hope he is going to be ok, don't want to over worry you but I'd rather always be overcautious than under, just really wouldn't be happy with his demeanor.

Poor you and Lucas! I must say I stopped feeding lamb to my boys a long time ago, they seem more likely to react to this than anything else and after an episode with the little one passing blood and mucus in stools that was it. They do get raw chicken wings though. I hope you see some improvement in your boy, we are thinking of you both x.

Thank you. Lucas must have been listening to our conversation as just before vet rang he perked up and was charging round the garden playing with his cousin. If he hasn't passed anything by late morning tomorrow he is to go back. Can only hope that it's not a bone. He normaly eats grass especialy at this time of year but there is a difference to grazing and wanting to be sick, he was desperate, ate all he could in the garden and then sat by the gate waiting to go to the field. Fingers crossed.

Oh, that's good to hear Lacy--if he's happy to play he must be on the mend. Hope tomorrow is a better day for you both!

Many thanks for your replies. Lucas still looking slightly tired but much brighter, and hopefully on the mend Good news also that he has been this morning, never so pleased to see the brown stuff.  So no X ray today!

That's great news, I was just about to ask you how he was doing--we get to keep the souvenir grey hairs though :)
