im trying to get together the facts and figurse that show how the registrations and rescue/welfare rocketed after the 101 dalmations film......if anyone knows such figures or can point me in the right direction id be grateful :)

In 1960 there were 906 dals registered. The first cartoon came out in 1961 and registrations rose to 1122. In 1962 they were up to 1448 and rose steadily by about 100 each year, until 1968 when Fanhill Faune was BiS at Crufts. Then registrations rose from 2348 in 1967 to 3218 in 1968, then started falling back till 1971 when 2049 were registered.

It should be possible to find the date of the film release here in the UK and compare that with the KC's reg stats?

....or was it pre-2001?

Let's see ... the first live action one came out in 1996 ... 1995 registrations were 3120, 1996 registrations were 3910 (the highest ever), 1997 registrations were 3786, 1998 down to 3058.

102 dalmatians came out in 2000: 1999 figures were 2679, 2000 figures 2718, 2001 figures 2062, 2002 figures 2071 ...

It's clear that publicity for a breed, whether through films or Crufts, has a noticeable effect on breed numbers, especially bearing in mind that not all will be registered.

Not such a big jump for the second film then, Jeangenie?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 28.05.11 21:41 UTC
Thankfully, no. It wasn't such a popular film.

Interesting to see the figures..... does anyone have them for St Bernards, when the Beethoven films came out?

I think if you look at several breeds you can identify fluctuations, not all will be associated with the media.

What about GSD after K9?
DDB after Turner and Hooch
Lowchens after Hart to Hart
OES after Dulux
Bloodhounds after the dog food ad

The list is actually endless if you start to sit down and think of all the dog filsm, tv series, adverts etc not to mention Crufts etc.
