My poor peggy had to have 8 teeth extracted on wednesday, when we got her back she had a huge swelling on the right side of her face,I was so shocked to see this,I spoke to the vet and they said they had to suture one socket as it was bleeding, they said they may of hit a small blood vessel.
I am actually a dental nurse so i do get it, but I have not seen a swelling come on so fast, post operatively the bleeding did not stop fully until about midnight,3 tea towels a 1 kitchen roll later.the other side of her face swelled also but that was much slower so that is just reaction to tooth removal.
Peg is compromised anyway as she takes a very low dose of steroids, this means she cant have metacam or any thing like it as it would interact, they gave me two syringes to inject which was an opoid(spelling?) painkiller.
Problem is,dog is crying all the time, even as I sit here and type,I know it will be painful but I thought by now it would have calmed down,I dont have any kids but I now know what its like to have a baby cry the whole day,i am slowly going off my head,i thought about injecting myself yesterday.
What can I do? she only really cries when I am around, she has eaten with no real problems and she doesn't cry atall when I go to the fridge.
Does this mean its all for me? is this just getting over the trauma of it all,she also doesn't cry when I go upstairs to do somthing,I am struggling with do I go and get more pain relief from the vet,or try to carry on as normal.I do baby my dogs,i cant help it and I think I might be making her worse.
I dont want to ignore her,but maybe I should just go out for a couple of hours today, any thoughts, ideas, magic cures, please post,
Ash

I think if she is eating and wanting to eat(following you to the fridge) then it really can't be that bad.  She is getting painkillers to take her over the first couple of days and after that the pain should be subsiding anyway.  I think she is playing you because you feel so bad for her.  Just treat her like normal( or a man with the cold) No sympathy!!  I would try giving her ice cubes(so long as she doesn't crunch) as mine love licking and sucking ice cubes during the summer, I think it might take some of the swelling away.

Ashlee I would be concerned that part of the tooth has been left if they had difficulties extracting it. I had a similar experience where they had done this and had a swelling and severe pain. I had to go back and they had to open my gums up and dig out the fragments and stitch me back up again. The relief after it was done was amazing so might be worth getting her checked again.

She obviously isn't a dog that cries a lot which is why you are finding it so distressing, she probably is in pain, 8 teeth and one that has had major problems, she is probably very sore, it can take a few days for us to stop feeling sore after extractions so of course she is at the very least going to feel very uncomfortable, she may even feel weak after such a lot of blood loss.

When it comes to food and showing no pain in front of other dogs and even other people, I have no doubt she will do what dogs do and hide her pain, it's part of a dogs survival makeup to show no pain or weakness where possible, dogs don't sit and cry to themselves either they see no point in it, and will continue to eat if they can for survival. But, when it is just you and her she is trusting enough to show her pain, if she were my dog she would just get TLC for as long as needed, she's been through a lot.

Hopefully she will be ok in a day or two, but I agree with LJS in a check up for her, just to make sure, being a dental nurse yourself is great maybe you can double check too. :-)

I hope that she is back to herself soon, poor girl, must be very upsetting for you, just be there for her. :-)

thanks,I did take her back to the vet this morning in the end to do a double check,he had a good look and said all was well, but being a saluki hound means anesthetic stays in her system? thats what he said, also said that she would have been turned over a few times during the procedure and although they try not to pull her around she might be a bit achey especially as she has rheumatoid arthritis.
I did not ask if they had left any root behind,I assumed they would have told me.
She was a bit better this afternoon,I think this will just take its time,I have to up her steroid dose aswell for a few days so I think that will help aswell, thanks for your replies,
Ash

The anaesthetic can make them cry. One of my dogs howled very pitifully and cried for a good few hours after an operation to remove a claw that had broken right back close to his toe. The vet told us that as the effects of the anaesthetic wore off the howling and crying would cease and it did slowly improve and had stopped by the following day.

I was just about to say the same thing as Harley.

Hugs for poor Peggy and you too...To let you know what our dog was like and all are different when in pain, like humans!
Our oldest Pug whose vet check up led to getting her teeth out last year and I have to say she was fine (ish) after a day or two, eating tin paste food given by vet, no bleeding or crying and a little bit unsteady on her feet and more sleepy probably the anesthetic, In all honesty I expected her to be far worse, however after five days was wanting to eat our other dogs royal canin dry and i was worried in case of it hurting her...its only mini size, the vet on calling to check said let her eat what she wants too, dry or wet food, she still has the option of dry or wet and prefers the dry!
Only thing now she is rather drooley and needs her chin to be wiped more frequently, pugs dont have much of a neck! also a year on and her tooth pops out and we say Put your tooth in and she does!
I would think Peggy might need to be taken back as I know Bb didnt bleed and she was only left with one tooth plus she is a very pampered pooch too and of course even more so now like your Peggy...I do hope she is ok and as always us Mums know our kids best eh!
