Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Wonderful surprise - cautionary tale!
- By gwen [gb] Date 25.05.11 09:31 UTC
Early on Monday morning Tutu presented me with 2 adorable Balck and Tan pups - a boy and a girl.  I could not be more delighted as I was certain she had not taken to the mating, and was not pregnant.  There had been no signs of being in whelp, and at week 6 I took her for a scan to confirm my suspicion - the scan agreed no pups.

She has carried on her usual extremely active lifestyle  ( she is very agile and jumps the fence between my gardens, over gates, out of the run etc.) Not had any extra food or supplements, had no "tummy" or enlarged nipples.  On Sunday evening she was not too keen on her dinner, but ate it in the end.  She was a little restless and desperate to get upstairs (she has only slept upstairs 2 years ago when she had a litter).

Decided to take her to bed with me "just in case" as I knew this should have been her due date, privately telling myself off for being gullible and just desperate to think perhaps I might get my longed for pup.  She settled beautifully, no digging, no wandering around and slept till it was just getting light when she woke me by jumping on the bed and trying to burrow under the duvet.  She then did a couple or circles, squated down and produced puppy number 1!  Within 15 minutes puppy number 2 made her appearance.

I have never had or heard of such an unexpected and easy birth, all over in 15 mins, pups feeding beautifully, new Mum happy and settled!  They were big babies too, 9.5 & 10.5 oz.  Both doing beautifully!  Now thinking of names.

Moral of the tale - don't believe scans and sometimes don't even believe your own instinct.  She usually sleeps in a cage in the dog room with her son - so very glad I "listened" to her and let her sleep in my room!  This was a much longed for litter as she has very infrequent seasons, her previous litter (her first) are now two and a half years old and she has only had 1 intervening season when she was mated but did not take.

Congratulations to you both.  Nothing surprises me as one of my girls gave birth on my sons shoulder while he was lying in his bed

Oh WOW! Thank goodness you listened to your girl.

Well I guess a big toast is in order ***Cheer!*** I think Tutu deserves a huge cyber cuddle too, so pleased for you, bet your still in shock! Now.... ARE YOU SURE YOU ARE NOT DREAMING. Give yourself a quick pinch just to make sure. :-D

Wonderful news. :-)

Congrats on your 2 surprise packages, wonder where she was hiding pups of those sizes.

Will certainly make anyone who has had a negative scan be cautious that it may not be true.

Enjoy them,I hope they turn out to be the quality you were hoping for too.

Congrats on the pups.

My girl had two, like you settled in the night.  She got up once to got to toilet then slept until morning.  She had them like shelling peas.  i wonder if it due to small litters lol.  Her pups were heavier as well.

I've found two pups get away with murder, hardly in the pen and being played with, with there only being two (any excuse).  I'm finding sort of hard to let them/one go as a small litter so don't think that'll be happening.

Are you planning on keeping yours.

WELL I NEVER!  You learn something new every day, don't you. BIG CONGRATULATIONS to you and Tutu. Didn't she do well eh? Seeing as how they were "secret" and "hidden", you'll have to think of appropriate names for them............. "Hide 'n Seek"?

I have no experience of breeding but I often read the breeding board and note the number of questions about scans, due dates etc and the sadness when it seems a much longed for litter is not to be

How lovely to read your good news then and to realise, as you rightly say, there's always room for a smidgen of hope

Congratulations Gwen and Tutu and welcome to your two surprise deliveries :)

Great idea, especially as Tutu's mum was Darcey Bussell!
