Anybody know this area very well as looks like a dog friendly beach but concerned about the mention of tides ?

Is that Lydney in the Forest of Dean?

Well I've never seen a beach at the Forest of Dean.  There is the Severn - very well known for strong tides.  People come from all over the world to ride The Bore.  It's the second largest in the world.  I wouldn't want to risk my dogs in the water.  Although my Collies loved running through the forest, and met their first deer.

Yes it is the Forest of Dean . I think it is a estuary type of beach which is mainly stoney but is tidal.

I presume it is somewhere up or down from the harbour.

I dont know about Lydney itself but we live further down the Severn Estuary:  there is a very strong tide here as you know, the Severn has the 2nd highest tidal range in the world meaning that the river/sea goes out a long way at low tide.  There is a lot of mud in the Severn (clay) so I don't allow my dogs to range too far out as there are very soft patches but on the 'beach' or close to the coast you'll probably find fairly firm ground. Due to flood risk much of the coast is protected by sea defences and the walls and earth banks provide good walking for the dogs.

If you are planning it for a holiday just make sure that you have the facility to wash the dogs.  The mud is like clay 'slip' and gets everywhere - particularly if they charge about like loonies, as mine do! - I even have to wash it out of their ears :)  It doesn't smell great either but the dogs don't care

I think we have a walk in shower at the lodges if not I am sure we will be able to borrow a hose as they are dog friendly lodges so assume they cater for muddy hounds ! I have also got some of those dog towel bags so can put them in those !! I am sure we will find a smaller river somewhere to let the girls have a swim .

The lake at Mallards Pike is good for dog swimming.

We live in Lydney and wouldn't let our dogs swim in the Severn because of the tides. Second the reccommendation for Mallards Pike, lovely lake for swimming and walks to dry them off. Blakeny Straits/Wenchford is nice for paddling and a lovely walk from Mallards.
