Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Bitch not come into season
- By Gema [gb] Date 24.05.11 08:21 UTC
Hi,

My 11 month old homebred bitch has not come into season yet and I am beginning to think that it is a little strange?
I have her mother and she came into season aged about 9 months - they were born at exactly the same time of the year (mid June).
She is a medium size gundog, what does anyone think? Is there any point going to the vets or is she still within 'normal' range?

Thanks

Two years ago my bitch had a litter of ten and 9 of them were bitches. Their first season varied from the earliest at 8 months to the latest at 14. Bitches are a bit like us, all different and she'll come in season when she's ready.

Would not even think of worrying until she is at least 18 mths. and even then it would only be just to check there is no physical problem.

That first season is their body saying they are physically ready to have pups[not that anyone in their right mind would mate a bitch on her first season]if for any reason they are under the weather, stressed, been some upheaval in their life or under weight this can be delayed.

When is her dam next due in? Will probably find she will come in at the same time, my bitch pup had her first when her dam had her second one after having the pups and hers are 7-8 months apart.

As has been said nothing to worry about just yet.

One of mine pushed up to 14 months before she decided to come in and yet her mother was 5 months for her first. Nothing to worry about.

I have a bitch here that is in season for the first time. She is 13 1/2 months. If my memory is right her older full sister was about 17 months before her first season  Plenty of time yet for your girl.

25 months for one of my girls first season, then 12 months later her second, which she had a litter with - 9 strong healthy pups.

my 2 litter sisters...1 had her first season at 6 months and the other at 8.
My oldest girl didn't have her first season til well over 12 months and now has regular seasons every 8 months.

My older girl didn't come until until 2 weeks short of her 1st birthday.

Enter your girl in a show you really want to go to, that's how to get them coming in! :-D

That seems to have done the trick...lol.

I think she is now just starting to come into season - and I was meant to be showing her next week at the Royal Cornwall Show.... last chance as a pup!!
