It's almost impossible to say.

You do not say when she was mated.  The mucus can appear long before a bitch goes into labour.

At this time you should have an expereinced mentor if you are not experienced with canine midwifery, otherwise not knowing anything about what is normal and what might spell trouble you are putting the bitch in danger, bitches can and do die during labour.

A clear mucus discharge is what we call the mucus plug it is one of the signs of imminent whelping, though the first whelp can appear anywhere between 12-48 hours from now on, she needs watching continually, she will probably wish to go out to the garden frequently to empty herself, you must follow and watch wherever she goes now as she goes through the stages of labour, particularly taking a torch out into the garden with you on an evening as the first whelp can pop out anywhere. :-)

Dandalion - if your sister is concerned about her bitch, she should be contacting her vet for advice and letting them know that something could be happening. Bitches that have been mated deserve the best possible care from their owners, the owners have let it happen and have a duty to do their best for them - and that involves spending money at the vets' if necessary.

At 54 days it is too early for puppies to survive, some bitches will show a clear mucus discharge some time in the last weeks of pregnancy, this becomes more noticeable before labour.

If there are not other signs of labour then I would not be concerned, but watch carefully.

As well as an experienced person to help does your sister have 'The Book of the Bitch' if not order it and it should arrive within 24 - 48 hours from Amazon, or you can get one in Pets At Home or similar.  It needs reading from cover to cover and then the whelping parts while your sister waits.

then your bitches cleaned it away before you noticed.

Made a phone call in-between finishing my post and can now see that she is 54 days, although whelping can and does happen early sometimes, I agree popping her down to the vet would be the best idea just to check everything is ok, if she is unsettled, panting and running from room to room she most probably is in the early stages, but a vet will confirm for sure. :-)

I do see it in my Malinois but it is far, far easier to notice in the Papillons as it gets stuck on the fur and makes it sticky! Happens at least a week before the birth.
