Topic Dog Boards / General / Dap Spray?
- By mommaduck [gb] Date 22.05.11 17:25 UTC
I will be picking up my new puppy in 2 weeks time and would value anyone's opinion, or experience, using a Dap spray in the car.

The puppy will be used to short car journeys but as I will have a 6 hour journey ahead(thats providing there are no traffic problems, in that case it will be longer)I really want to make the journey as stress free as possible for the little one.

Any advice would be helpful as well as other tried and tested tips to avoid stress and car sickness.

I have been using it, no idea if it helps or pup would have been fine without it. I used it for the pusp goign to their new homes too, only one was a little sick on way home, and that was the last to go.

I bought it when I took Mum to USA thinking it a good idea to spray her crate before handing her over to be loaded on plane.  She was certainly very chilled on both journeys, but was a seasoned traveller anyway.

Thanks, Barbara, It probably will be worth ago.

(Does it work on hubbies by any chance - a long journey with him wittering  away)

Hello there!

From what you are aware, has your new puppy had problems travelling on the short journeys?

I picked our pup up on monday, she had some - only some, short journey experience. Her food was held from her for 3 hours before we picked her up and she had a 3 hour journey from Durham to Nottingham. We took a crate and bed for her and she slept the whole way home without a problem. We stopped and gave her some water, let her use the loo etc, but apart from that she was absolutely no bother at all.

It just makes me wonder if people should be preventing a problem before it's known as a problem? I appreciate some will say it's to prevent sickness and an unhappy puppy, but you don't know what it's like for pup, whether it will make the pup feel more sick or how pup will ever be on long journeys if you give it her from the start.

You asked for experiences, this was mine. Hope it helps.

Sarah :)

I use it when transporting dogs to their new homes for my breed welfare.
The van we use is often used to transport my own dogs about so smells of them but I like to think the spray helps the strange dog feel a little more at ease.
Cannot prove it works on the dogs, but makes me feel better :-)

i'll watch this thread with interest as i am thinking of the collars / plug in's / sprays for a dog that gets a little over the top.

My husband was sorely tempted to leave the pup, and me, on the hard shoulder!!  Normally the most tolerant of men he was driven to distraction by a puppy that howled (really, really howled) for long stretches of time on our 4 hour journey home.  I hadn't even thought of a DAP spray, worth a try!

Life got much quieter when I sat in the back seat with my arm in the crate.  The puppy peed on my arm then fell asleep with his head up my sleeve!!  He wasn't sick and not exactly distressed either just shouting - he's been a complete poppet in the car ever since with no sickness and blessedly quiet.

One of our other dogs, same breed, was very quiet on his 4 hour journey home but poo'd pee'd and was sick!  He continued to suffer from travel sickness for several months after and he became a very noisy traveller too for a while.

Take plenty of towels, kitchen roll, newspaper, bin bags, water and a few toys for distraction if necessary.  Try and use a crate with multiple doors for your convenience and set it up on the back seat (split seats are useful for this).  Good luck with your new puppy :)

Fully agree with dogs ababes tip. Rescue remedy is good too just a drop on puppys tongue  as needed

Hi - I used a small DAP collar on my most recent puppy which I put on at the time of collection , also used DAP spray on her bedding in the car crate and I'm sure they both helped :)
