I am shocked that you have a six week old puppy as breeders should not be letting the puppies go really until they are 8 weeks old.
Did your breeder mention cages/crates to you?
We breed and show staffies and when our pups go to their new homes we always advise cage/crate training.
The pup will treat the cage as its bed. Put some bedding in there, some toys and water. Give the pup its feeds in there too. When you are there with your puppy leave the door open so the puppy can play then go back into his bed when he is tired.
As for house training 6 weeks is still really early to be seeing miracles. The best way is as soon as puppy wakes put him straight outside - in a garden only where you know there have been NO unvaccinated dogs. After every meal put your puppy straight outside and at any other time when your puppy seems to be sniffing and circling. When your pup does go to the toilot outside give plenty of praise. If he has an accident inside say no and put him straight out.
We reccomend that you do not use newspaper for training as it means getting your pup to think newspaper is OK then later on learn it is not OK??? confusing ehhh.
Using a cage helps with house training as dogs on the whole do not like messing their beds - there are the odd exceptions though!! :-)
Staffies can, as you may already know, be very destructive. The cage has another advantage there as when you are in bed or out at least you know your dog is safe and not chewing things that could cause him harm and your house is safe from been chewed!! :-).
Remember the more times you can manage to put him out in the day the less accidents and the quicker he will learn. For a good few weeks yet though he will probably not manage needing a pee in the night.

We have a 10 week old Staffy and he has been brilliant from day one . We got him at 7 and a half weeks old and the breeder has taught them really well even before they all left their mum . She uses old towels instead of newspapers as they seemed to like the "feel " better rather than noisy paper . Anyway whatever the reason , it worked with our pup . As soon as we brought him home , we put down some old towels and he uses them everytime - we are gradually working the towel towards the back door and he still uses this to method - wherever we move it to he follows and uses .

Don't 'put' him in the garden - take him - you go too, and you praise the socks off him when he does what you want where you want - give him a little food treat too - all the rest of the advise you've been given is 100%

our 10 week newf is paper trained , we take her out after meals/play etc~she gets praise when she goes on the paper...but SUPER praise when she goes outside!!
We have a few "show off" wee's every now and then ( if we are eating she will look at us and wee in front of us) or if we wont play~but i can live with that!!

Agree for the first couple of weeks take him out with you but will have to learn that it is ok to go on his own too.
By "put" did not mean "throw" you know :-) lol

Staffie,
do you show your dogs ? We are going to our first show on Sunday ( as spectators only ) as pup is much to young . But if you have any advice on how to start off with showing I would be most grateful
Lel :)

Hi

Yeah we show. We are going to a show on Staurday.
Is it the Merseyside Limit show you are going to on Sunday?
We love showing and it is a great hobby.
The best thing for you to do would be join your nearest SBT club and if possible go to their ringcraft. If it is too far away then go to an all breed ringcraft as it will at least get your dog used to other dogs around him in the ring and give you ringcraft skills.
If you ever need any advice you are welcome to email me on Branspatch7@aol.com

Thanks Staffie :)
Yeah we are going to the show on Sunday - up in Warrington . Its the first I've been to actually but I'm really looking forward to it
We have found a Staff only handling class up in Chester ( we are on the Wirral ) once pup is able to go out . When talking to a couple of guys re; joining SBT Clubs they both said you dont have to be a member to show . I would prefer to join a club but neither seemed very helpful . ( they were both members too - of different clubs )!! How do you actually join?
is there much difference between handling class and ringcraft - do you need to do both ? or will a good handling class cover the same topics ? A complete novice but very eager to learn !! :)

A good handling class will cover ringcraft for your staffie.
You do not have to join but may be best if you are going to continue going to the handling. You can enter the clubs open show without being a member but not the limited show.
(I think that is right).
Where did you get your pup from?

Staffie
sorry about the double message !! There was an error message when posting . Doh!!
We got our pup from Derbyshire three weeks ago . He's a cutie . Our last dog was a Staff and I just love the breed so much - dont think I could have another dog now .

Thnks Staffie :)
Yeah we are going to the show on Sunday . Which one are you going to ?
I cant wait - its the very first one we've been to . Can I ask how you actually JOIN a SBT Club . I spoke to two seperate members of clubs but neither actually gave me much info .
How many dogs do you have ? How long have you been showing for ?

To join phone the secretary of the club and ask her to send you a membership application form or else go to the handling class and request a form there.
We have 4 staffies (3 bitches and a dog) and 2 dogue de bordeaux (dog and bitch)
We have been showing for about 3 years now and love it.
We have some friends that live in Newton-le-Willows in Merseyside. They own and show one of the bitches we bred. Think he is going to have a lok around the show on Sunday and he is at the show in Alfreton with us on Saturday.

Wow
you have your hands full then ;)
Thanks for the info . Every little helps . We never actually got pup with the intention of showing . But he has a good pedigree and its something that really interests me at the mo. I will soon find out on Sunday I suppose whether or not its what i expected .
Its all up to pup too , I suppose . Do your dogs enjoy it ?

KC reg blues can be really expensive, because they are so uncommon.
Did you see your pups mom and dad and of what type were they eg. short, leggy etc.
- By sasha2 [gb] Date 03.01.03 15:29 UTC
