Has your vet taken swabs? It may be an antibiotic resistant bug.

No foreign body and no swab taken. As I say present med. effective for a number of months then symptoms return.

I think you need to have swabs taken so it can be established what bugs are causing the problem. One of my bitches had suffered with recurring ear infections since a puppy and she was getting really upset at having her ear treated so I had the works done on her,x rayed to see if there was bone damage and her ear swabbed and thoroughly cleaned while she under general anesthetic, she had a very antibiotic resistant bug that was resistant to practically everything but there was one drug that would kill it off and touch wood she has been free of infection for the last 3 months.

You need to have the swab to determine which drug is best.  It may have worked for roscoebabe's dog but that does not mean it will for yours.

The only way to know for sure is to have the swab done, the sample from this can then be tested to determine which drugs the bug causing the infection is sensitive to.

When Soli had severe nail infections for months we had to do this - might not sound related but the bug causing it was pseudomonas, which is usually responsible for severe ear infections.  Had we not sent a sample off we would not have known precisely which drug to use, and even then it took 2/3 months constant treatment with the right drug to beat it.  If we hadn't done the sample, we'd never have guessed pseudomonas and in all likelihood, she'd still be suffering as the normal (and even less used) treatments for nail infections weren't working.

I absolutely get the point that a swab may be needed for my dog.I was enquiring what been effective treatment for 'roscoebabes' dog.

It's marbofloxacin in tablet form and aurizon ear drops.

I used to have a collie with reoccurring ear infection. What the vet gave worked while using it but as soon as we finished it, it came back used thornit out of desperation and it cleared it up in no time and just used the thornit from time to time and it never came back. The vets were talking about operating on her ear but luckily that was never necessary.

One of my girls had a reoccuring ear infection and we solved it by having a full deep ear clean out then maintained after by ear cleaner and thornit. She has been fine now for a couple of years now.

I ended up with £500 vets bills for treating an ear infection, which was in the end found to be pseudomonas.

It took several months before it was finally knocked on the head after the usual treatment, syringing under GA etc.

We used Epiotic ear cleaner to keep it clean until the infection was finally beaten.

just had a visit to vet today for same problem. Vet gave him 2 weeks supply of steroids and Surolan ear drops, and return visit in 2 weeks. He had same problem last year and took one short course of steroids and three lots of drops and ears were washed out once daily for 2 weeks using canaural.

I have a dog that I've now spent £1,000.00 on for an ear infection on one side.  I used Thornit years ago on my other dogs but didn't think much of it.  May try it with my girl now as I have had swabs done, different drops and as soon as it stops the infection comes back again.

dose was 80mg daily for 10 days.
