- By luvurdog [gb] Date 06.05.11 08:49 UTC
for herpes injection, i just asked my vet about it and for both the injections and consultant it will be £164 , i think thats steep but i have never done it before
- By Dayzee [gb] Date 06.05.11 08:59 UTC
I pay sixty pounds for both :) and that includes consultation.
- By aimibobs [gb] Date 06.05.11 09:25 UTC
I pay around £55 for each including the consultation.
In fact my girl is having her 2nd tonight - she's huge now!!

Can't remember exactly how much I paid last time but it wasn't more than £70 for the two.  I think £164 is extortionate!
- By luvurdog [gb] Date 06.05.11 10:09 UTC
thats what i thought, but because i have not done them before i just was not sure , thanks

I am £32.00 for each injection. This is the first time I have used it. The 2nd jag is due on Monday.
- By Isabella [gb] Date 06.05.11 11:30 UTC
£72 for both inc consultation.
- By ka7e [gb] Date 09.05.11 16:41 UTC
Just been quoted £33.40 for each jab, but expect consultation fee will be added - £22.95. I have to pay for both whether the second is used or not.

It varies on vets.
3 years ago we had a girl with herpes & hence slowly lost all the puppies.
So on the next litter we vaccinated. 2 of the puppies were born with abnormalities.
My friends had been over when the puppies had herpes and so they decided to vax their 2 preg girls just to be on the safe side. They have been breeding for over 15 years and 1 pup from each litter had deformatits (cleft lip to name 1).
My auntie at the same time (before we knew) had used my stud dog so she too got the vax done and one of her puppies had only 3.5 legs yet her litter before was perfect.
It could be coincidence but all seems very strange to me??
Since them we have never used herpes vax, instead we had everyone tested for it and all the girls came back clear. (The infected girl was spayed and went to live with my sister on her cattle farm).
Now I never let any of my girls out 3 weeks before they whelp or if I have any pups at all (We have a massive garden for open exercise). And we do an annual herpes test. It is cheaper than the vaccination and there are no harmful chemicals involved so for me it is the best way round it all.
I also test my boy everytime he has covered an outside girl. (It is worth taking the money from the stud fee for my own piece of mind and people like to know that you have a clear dog) and I believe that it has inspired some people to test their own dogs which is good for helping to stop people breed from infected girls.
Back to your original question my vet charged £30 per vac but I was quoted £90 per vac at another vet!

I had always believed that there wasn't a reliable herpes test so that vaccination was the only viable option.

Can you let us know which lab does the testing.  Seems much more sensible if you have had issues with breeding problems that might be due to Herpes to test.

Almost all dogs are exposed to the herpes virus at some time in their lives and, once they have been exposed to it, it is always present (although latent) and these previously infected dogs will release the virus from time to time.  Serology (blood test) can show which dogs have been exposed to it, but essentially if you have dogs which attend shows, or competitions, go out with a dog walker or meet and play with other dogs - they almost definitely will have been exposed to it.  Tests on dogs have shown that between 43-93% of the population have been exposed to herpes (and therefore will release the virus from time to time).  Serology cannot tell whether these previously infected dogs are releasing the virus at that time.

It is possible if a bitch tests negative, to isolate her entirely from other dogs for the last 3 weeks of her pregnancy and for the first 3 weeks after birth, so she does not contract it during this time.  But most bitches would not test negative....

So in that case why do so many bitches have no particular issues with conception, whelping and rearing of their litters?

The losses I have had in stillbirths, and puppies not reared are under 10% and no more than I would expect in a species with multiple births..

I last bred puppies over 10 years ago and don't remember canine Herpes being mentioned at all. My bitch lost over 50% of her first litter to stillbirths and fading puppies, which I put down to her, and my, lack of experience. Two years later exactly the same thing happened and I now suspect she had CH. Obviously she was not bred from again.

With my latest bitch (different breed), I'm just trying to cover all the bases - like everyone else, I want to raise the healthiest puppies I possibly can! The stud dog has just returned from Europe so has obviously been exposed to lots of different doggy environments and bitches from several countries. IMO that makes him a fairly high risk for exposure to CH.

First jab today cost £33.40, no consultation fee.

brainless - The virus is passed on if a mum who is carrying it (has it latent) has it activated during pregnancy.  Ie - as the wiki article says, from time to time the dogs which have been exposed to it and are carriers of it, will have it activated sometimes, and then it will return to a latent state and not manifest itself for a while again.  If the dog is pregnant/has young pups during one of those activation times (or contracts the disease for the first time via contact with another dog), then it can be passed to pups.

Activation is also said to be stress-related. So pregnancy and whelping are probably the ideal triggers.

Keeping pups very warm helps protect them too, the virus cannot replicate at high temps, so a chilled pup is very vulnerable.

I pay £45 per injection, and there is no consultation fee.

I stopped using the CHV vaccine as I don't think it made any difference to my dogs. I have never used it for the Malinois. I have only ever lost two pups from any Malinois bitch, one stillborn, one was so small and weak I had it put to sleep rather than trying to rear it -both were in large litters (one of ten, one of nine). All others have survived. Then I mated a Papillon bitch for the first time, she gave birth to two dead pups, one which had died very recently (was alive hours before birth), one which had been dead for a while. Second time I mated her I used the herpes vaccine. She then gave birth to two dead pups, again had died very recently, most likely moments before or during birth, despite it not being prolonged, and one live pup. She will not be bred from again. Next Papillon litter (different bitch) I used the vaccine and had 3 pups born, all adult now and doing well. Mated the same bitch again and this time decided to NOT use the vaccine, 4 puppies born alive and well, which was even more than I had ever expected from this one. So I don't know what to think. I don't even isolate my bitches from other dogs when they give birth as I go on what they want and so far all my pups have been born in the living room with the small dogs in the same room. I just use a puppy pen around the whelping box for the first week or so when the bitch wants more privacy. Tried having bitches give birth in a room of their own (with me there, of course) absolutely refused and were very unhappy, wanted to be in living room despite other dogs and cats.

I've also never had a mated bitch not get pregnant. I go to training classes roughly 5 times a month, shows twice a month or so.
