I have a 4 month old Whippet bitch, She is blue/white parti colour. She is KC registered and been vet checked at 8 and 10 weeks old and was healthy. She was fully vaccinated, chipped etc. The last week i have started to notice patchy hair loss, on the face below ears, back, and on closer inspection her chest. She has shown no signs of itching, irritation.Eating, pooing, peeing normal. the skin looks normal underneath. She does not have fleas. There appears to be dry skin though, like dandruff when you rub her coat up the wrong way.
I have read that whippets, blue especially can have fur loss or 'mutant alopeacia' but she has lost white fur on her chest too...so im guessing she wouldnt lose that if it were this?? She will be vet checked tomorrow but i would like some advice from whippet experienced people as to what this may be, and if she would still lose the white fur with mutant alopeacia? Thanks

The simple answer is...it is warmer & the coat sheds at this time of the year.

Loosing hair can be diet, if all other things are fine.
It could be some kind of seasonal hair loss, it could also be demodectic mange- this is not catching but is simply the overgrowth of tiny organisms that occur naturally in the follicles of all healthy dogs.
If the immune system takes a dip for some reason, then the mites can proliferate and you get a pattern of hair loss that often occurs on the face, flanks and chest. Have a think if anything has happened that might have stressed the pup a little, even jabs might have had an effect. In such a young dog it is generally recommended that you leave it to see if it resolves itself, once the immune system has got back up to speed. Often a pup will have one episode of this never to occur again. Concentrate on boosting her immune system.
Of course, if it doesn't resolve it can then be treated. If it reoccurs it can still be treated but is indicative of some underlying immune system flaw- rather like in humans who get patches of asthma or hayfever. In this case you just treat as and when necessary throughout the dog's life.
Do let us know what your vet says and what the diagnosis is. I hope all is okay.
You were spot on! Thanks for the help, vet says it dosnt need treatment at the moment and to monitor her, i have started to give her some supplements to help her coat, and added meat into her diet as she was on dry food only. The dandruff seems to have gone already, but as long as its not bothering her i will see how she goes, that was the strange thing i never even see her scratching so it was very odd.
Anyway good news, nothing major and its not bothering her. Hopefully with the diet and supplements her immune system will soon boost and that will be the end of it! Thanks for the helpful reply much appreciated
