Somewhere private, secluded and draught free near to the exit to the garden.

You will need to sleep there too so it has to be big enough to accomodate you.

There will be mess and staining fluids to deal with - a very reluctant mother to drag away from her babes to toilet....so YES downstairs :-)

Definitely on the ground floor, if at all possible. What is the current set up on the ground floor?

I'm so glad I live in a bungalow!

Thanks guys Have a dining room, kitchen, utility room down there, but she always sleeps in my bedroom or living room is it not better to put her where shes comfortable.

You'll have to be sleeping next to the box for a while anyway, so as long as you can set up a sleeping bag or something nearby I'm sure she'll settle fine in the box.

When my bitch was due the whelping box was placed in the living room and so that she was comforted by my presence and not think i was going to run off and leave her i used to sit in there with her. I even used to eat my dinner in there sat beside her. I would spend hours in there with her, both of us watching t.v. etc. She was obviously free to leave whenever she wanted but with an old duvet and plenty of cuddles my bedroom soon became second best. You will probably find that each bitch is different. Some like the company and others like privacy as the time gets closer. My bitch would not let me out of her sight before she'd had her pups so i used to sleep downstairs with her on the sofa. After the birth she didn't want to leave her babies it took plenty of encouragement to get her out for her first wee. The house rule was not to touch any of the babies while she was away from them as i didn't want her to feel insecure especially in the early days. Any draught free room with access to the outside is good as you will find she won't want spend any time away from them.
I hope you soon find a solution that suits you both.

My girl had her pups in the whelping box in the front room, she wanted to be near us and wouldnt use the box if it was in the kitchen...so front room it was. I slept on a mattress on the floor next to her and she was very settled.

If the bitch had had a caesar you could pick her up to take her outside..I believe this poster has a far larger dog :-)
