I have a 19 month old Blue Roane dog and seeking advice on whether to offer him for breeding or not.
I have been given the advise that I will be unable to offer him because he is not a kennel dog and that I should look into castration.(is this true)
Oliver Twist (as I call him) is KC registered and I have all his family back ground.
I would be most greatful for any advise your members may have to offer.
With thanks
Iain

Hi Iain,
Would suggest you have the health checks for your breed carried out and then show him at a few shows to see if the bitch owners are interested in using him as it is usual for a bitch owner to look over the dogs available rather than the dog owners to approach bitch owners

Hi Iain
I think you have misunderstood my previous advice on another board - I did not mean that people would not want to use your dog because he is not a kennel dog - I meant that most bitch owners would choose to go to an established "kennel" meaning a experienced breeder/owner with a good reputation for quality dogs. Sorry for the misunderstanding! My point was that Cocker breeders have the choice of many well-known, proven stud dogs so it is unlikely they would be interested in an unknown, inexperienced dog.
I echo Christine's reply - if you are seriously interested in breeding from your dog than you must have your dog eye-tested by a KC/BVA panelist (a hereditary eye problem called PRA occurs in Cockers & you need to check your dog is unaffected before you consider breeding from him) Other hereditary problems include a kidney disease called FN - you need to know whether your dog has any carriers of this disease in his pedigree. If he does, then it would be wise not to consider breeding from him.
My other advice still stands - using a dog at stud will not cure any behavioural problems you may be having with him at the moment!
Best Wishes
Jane
