Hi, My 10yr old JR girl has suddenly developed VERY greasy and smelly skin and coat. Ived checked her all over for fleas and found nothing, Ived bathed her with mild, unscented puppy shampoo, but this doesnt seem to have helped. This morning she was scratching and when I checked her she has a number of very small lumps with what looks like tiny puncture holes in them, shes very red and sore aswell. Shes constantly nibbling at her back and sides.
Appt for vets made, but just wondered if anyone can possibly shed any light on this for me.

It may be some sort of bacterial infection like Pyoderma.  You may need to get a skin scrape to find out for sure.

Link here about it :)  http://www.vetbase.co.uk/information/pyoderma-a-bacterial-skin-disease.php

sebaceous cysts?

The vet took skin scrapes and had a good look while we were there and could see nothing. He also cleared her anal glands, but didnt get anything out. The other thing he mentioned was blocked pores, we have some shampoo (Malaseb) to use on her every 3 days for 10 days and also some antibiotics, half a tab 2x a day (cephorum 500mg). If it hasnt cleared up after 10 days then we go back  (going back anyway)and hes going to test for 2 types of mange!!, although he doesnt think it is mange or mites. Shes normally happy and full of life, but today she hasnt wanted to do anything.

Fingers crossed we get it sorted.

Thanks for posting the outcome so far.  If he doesn't expect that it's mange or mites, fingers crossed that the Malaseb shows an improvement  in the skin.

I do hope everything settles down soon.

I read this about the Pyoderm, but that was the 1st thing the vet ruled out, but saying that she does have a lot of the symptoms including hot spots. In the 10yrs that weve had her we have very rarely had to take her to the vet, shes always been healthy, but just lately shes starting to look her age and now she needs the extra TLC to keep her happy.
It says that home treatment can be given during a flare up, if it happens again would I be able to give her something like Piriton to help ease the itchiness.
She doesnt have fleas and both she and the other 2 dogs are checked regularly and treated as is the cat.
Could it be a food allergy, shes on RC Vet Care Nutrition and seems to enjoy it.

Is she spayed, and does she have a thick greasy dandruff?

She is spayed (after her first season), but she doesn't have any dandruff, just a very greasy smelly coat and strange lumps, but no pustules.

Does sound as if the sebaceous glands have gone into over production but I am sure you will find the shampoo will help the condition.
