Topic Dog Boards / General / Very thick green discharge from my dogs pen*s?
- By sazzlemint [gb] Date 11.05.11 06:12 UTC Edited 11.05.11 11:38 UTC
Morning all! Sorry about the title it's not what everyone wants to read in the morning..lol
My Boy has been leaking this gunk from his pen*s over the past few days and its getting worse. I had mentioned it to a vet last week and she didnt think their was anything to worry about- but i think differently! I spoke to my own vet last night after i had taken down a urine sample to get it checked. She confirmed that it was cloudy, some protein & blood was also present as to was white blood cells- ph level normal. My vet said it sounds like a mild infection that would not need AB'S just a good flush out so I have washed his willy area including flushing out his willy several times over 12 hours with a mild bacterial scrub but nothing seemed to come out. However, this morning his bed (now my sofa) is covered with the mess. i'm taking him down to my vets today to be checked over.
My question is can dogs take AB's whilst on Metacam?
And has anyone had a dog that's been diagnosed with prostate cancer? as my concern is that this gunk is not coming from his willy are but from inside his uretha? thats coming from his prostate?

Any ideas please

This sort of discharge is normal and the information you give is too brief to take a stab as to if anything is wrong or not. How old is your dog, is he neutered.

For an intact dog going through the teenage period I would have considered this normal and it will ease when he becomes mature. Prostate cancer if very rare particularly in the intact male but very uncommon in the castrated, enlarged prostate is a different matter but mostly will only effect an elderly dog.

So you see we need to know a bit more about him to make suggestions but if there is a medical problem the vet would be the one to speak to and as you say they are not worried.

Sounds like Balinitis, and can be considered pretty normal.

http://www.houseandhome.org/dog-health-problems

"Balanitis
Balanitis is an inflammatory condition of the foreskin (the prepuce). It is a normal condition in most dogs, is commonly seen as a pus-filled discharge from the eye of the penis, and is very difficult to clear up. The prepucial cavity (the fleshy housing of the penis) is warm and moist, an ideal environment for bacteria. Sexual frustration is a contributing factor; the dog continually licks himself as a form of masturbation, so reinfecting the area.
Treatment can be instituted by syringing out the cavity and squirting an antibiotic cream into it two or three times a day for a five-day period. However, once medication ceases, reinfection is likely. As balanitis causes the dog so little trouble, it is regarded as an almost-normal condition and should only lead to a visit to the vet if the discharge becomes bloody, signifying an injury or inflammation of the sexual glands."

Other articles do link it to reduced fertility, so if he is to be a stud dog it might be worth getting it treated, (seems that you need to drain the liquid from the prepuce and squirt in antibiotic cream or lotion into the prepuce) but it can be recurring due to a dog constantly licking the area.

Pretty common with young boys - how old is he?

Mine went through a phase of this as an adolescent but it passed after a couple of months.  My pup is now 8 months and I'm pretty sure we'll get this with him too as he's just started the 'ooh look at this' phase :)

Do make sure to keep the area reasonably free of hair if possible, they sometimes draw hair back into the sheath which can cause infection or prevent the penis from fully retracting which might cause problems with blood supply.

Boys eh - who'd 'ave 'em :)

Thank you to you all for your reply's.
Tao is a 10 year old nutered Akita, who has had pevious problems with his bladder and also has a enlarged prostate which has a possible absess inside of it we have recently been told that he may have prostate cancer) as round cancerous cells have been found  (carcinomas).
We have just come back from our vets who have perscribed some AB's Noroclav  his urine has been re tested and he does have an infection!
Tao has never had any previous problems with his foreskin area with regards to leaking discharge so hopefully it should clear up pretty soon.

Thank you again for your posts- it's comforting to know other people can offer help and advise when your not able to seek advise from your vet.
