You can buy flea and worm treatment from Pets at Home... have to give your name and address, but it's only to check you're not 'over-buying' I think.  And it's about the same price (if not cheaper) than the vets, and no consultation fee!

Over the counter products from PAH are unlikely to have such a decent result as a vet recommended product.  However, there are canine chemists online who will be able to supply at a far better price than your vet.

I won't use a spot on as I refuse to worm my dogs on a monthly basis.  Having left 3 Collies unwormed for a year, and then sending faecal samples to Langford, to find out that no worms were found.  Obviously, it's a case of working out what risk your dogs are taking.  Where they are walked/run etc.

As to flea products, I only use a Frontline spray (prescription needed) when I see a flea.  Not at any other time.  It's worth mentioning that I haven't used Frontline in almost 5 years.

You are going to get different opinions, depending on the experience of members.  I like two different products, and won't combine a worming and flea treatment together, so flooding my dogs bloodstream with chemicals.  I just won't take the risk.  I use Panaucur for worming youngsters and Drontal for adults.  But my adults rarely need the treatment.

Ditto to pretty much everything Jean has said, I never treat unless necessary etc -except I use Drontal Puppy suspension as opposed to Panacur for pups. As regards PAH, they do sell treatments that are not over the counter, such as Panacur and similar (I needed some quickly once for some kittens so went there, they keep it in locked cabinets) but they typically only have ONE person per shop that has been trained to sell such products (which is required by law) so it can be hit and miss as to if you will be able to buy or not! I much prefer buying over the internet, (much cheaper) usually from  vet-medic in my case. I'd not be very happy if a vet wanted to charge a consultation fee for selling flea or worm treatment though!

You can even buy Frontline drops in the pharmacy in Morrisons these days -but they do charge a fortune for it!

i have never had the need to treat my dogs for fleas as like jean i would do them as and when i see a flea. I worm them every 6 months with Drontel that i buy from a normal chemist and it works out much cheaper than getting it from the vets.

You can get Frontline from PAH... so it's exactly the same product as you buy from a vet.  I've used it as and when necessary, the same with worming tablets which are also the same product you get from the vet.

The Fiproline PAH sell is just as good as Frontline - I agree most products sold in pet shops are not, but this one is fine to use. At least hubby says so and he worked for the trade association representing the animal medicine manufacturers, so he understands which active ingredients are as good as Frontline and which aren't!

Advocate DOES do Lungworm but does NOT do Tapeworm

Frontline spot on and Frontline spray are not the same product.  You don't go into a shop and buy Frontline spray over the counter.   It is a POM.

I won't use spot on, but do get a prescription from my vet for Frontline spray so that I can take advantage of buying from a pharmacy online.

Hi

Thanks for all your opinions, to be honest i never keep to a strick regeim with fleaing and worming, i normally think oh i have'nt done them in a while i better get it done (frontline spot-on for feaing and supermarket granuels for worming) never had any problems with flea's or worms though, well not that i have seen ! Also did'nt really want to be using advocate every month ! My mum says she saw an advert on tv though about worms in fox poo, and my too staffi's love to roll in some kind of very smelly poo, could this be fox poo ???? and if so do i need a special wormer or better wormer than supermarket one ?

Ta very much
