Ok so some of you will know I am getting my pup very soon, yay probably next weekend if all goes well :)
Am going shopping to day to stock up with new bits suggestions please for what you people have found good, particularly things suitable for chewing, home made things are fine.
My previous pups used to love chewing plastic bottles (supervised of course ) any ideas greatfully recieved.
have decide to go with the cheap collar idea until she is grown.
My other two are adults now and rarely play with anything at home so what do you think is good for puppy ?

one of those knotted rope toys lots of fun. a kong is I think an essential as nice safe toy that can be stuffed with food when pup needs to be confined and learn to be alone.
a large bottle of anti-chew spray for things you don't want chewed too lol !

I found frozen baby carrots were great for my pup - especially when teething - the frozen aspect to help soothe sore gums and the carrot to have a good old chomp on :)
Also cardboard boxes for shredding (eg. cereal boxes), you can also hide treats inside for pupt to find.
A Kong.
Treat dispenser toy (the sort they roll aorund and the tret falls out the holes).

Most pet shops sell them including pets at home, I think they are about £2 or £3

thank you i will have a look
The latest sqeeky toys without stuffing are a success with my lot, they shake, tug, and chew without rippng open and destuffing, also the knotted rope toys, and the best teething toy we have is a bunch of "plastic" keys.

I buy several rope toys and at teething time dappen them and put them in the freezer giving them to the pup when frozen solid, eases their gums and can be swapped when no longer frozen.
Yes Kongs are great but find anything less than a black one is too easily chewed even for my small breed, I wouldn't be happy to leave them unattended with any other colour. Freezing them after they have been stuffed makes them last longer.
There are so many toys out there but your dog may not like them all.
I like toys that they can shake to death ( bit I do have terriers) One of the best and easiest things I ever did was to wet a t towel, know it and freeze it, great for teething.
Not long now then Chris :)

Kong do a 'wubba' toy now that is a kong inside a really strong material with bits that come off it that they love to swing it around now :) We always used to 'plait' a few tea towels together and use them as tug toys as we were fed up with the ones you can buy from pet stores that are made up of rope leaving their bits all over the house and were concerned that it would represent a choking habit.
Ice cubes are much loved, too.
I always used to give my pups and dogs ice cubes, they loved chasing them and of course it helped to cool the gums. Then I read a piece by one of the vets in the dog paper ( can't remember which one and don't know if I have it in my file) that said never to give ice cubes as the coldness makes the stomach go into spasms a bit like when we get cramp, so I stopped doing it.

Thanks for that- I have always assumed that was an old wives tale so will be much more careful now.

Not much more I can add Chris - but wanted to say how
exciting!
Bet you can't wait! Sigh,,,, I do love puppies! :-) :-)
One of my pups came home for a week while his owners were on holiday (I do love that clause in my contract!) and he had a a toy made up of plaited fleece (like jumper/coat fleece). He absolutely loved it and I was very suprised how robust it was although he was quite a gentle pup.

Thank you Jean yes I cant wait. I am waiting for a call from the breeder to confirm exact pick up as she is (quite rightly) having the pick of the litter for showing and I am to have one of the others also to try showing
We are down to 3 little girls I know which one I want but have to wait to see what her final descion is. Mind any of the three will be fantastic they are all georgeous and first and foremost I want a furry friend to join us anything else is a bonus. if you can" nest" when expecting a pup thats what I am doing lol
Thank you everyone for your ideas they have given me some new things think about
My latest pup prefered his toys joined together. His very favourite was a hard chew ring attached by a short stretch of cotton rope to a bucket (one of those flexible trug bucket things which we bought to store his toys in). He carted this bloomin bucket around for ages, sweeping furniture and adult dogs out of the way and scooping up dust bunnies. ...til the bucket finally broke and he went into mourning.
He then had a rope tuggy attached to the chew ring instead and this was ideal for flinging about and shoving onto the back of our legs. The joy of puppies :-)
We recently found another incarnation of the 'attached toy' at the bottom of the carrrier bag basket - no idea how it ended up there - but this is a multicoloured ball made from thick tubes of rubber to which we tied a long length of dressing gown cord. He's now 8 months old and this thing must have got lost as least 2 months ago but he greeted it like a long lost friend with whimpers of delight and excitement. He's been towing it around for days and likes to thread it across doorways to amuse himself when we trip over the dratted thing.
**
wobbly ball thing - worth its weight in gold - buy 3!!
Have fun shopping

Nobbly Wobbly is the toy mentioned above, I had forgotten about that one, it has survived intact and is easy for the pup to pick up and although it is quite heavy that doesn't deter them.
My Mums pup had hours of fun with a football attacched to a long length of elastic, she found it in my garden and dragged it around all the obstacles and into the house, not easy for an 8 week old dachsie, it lasted till she managed to puncture the ball with her teeth and tear it apart.
A babble ball played with under supervision makes for hilarious play times as the ball issues various comments when it is touched or moved, one of my girls gets so excited and out of breath she can't last more than 15 minutes of frantic play before she needs a rest and the ball has to be put away, it works best on tiled or laminated floors.

Another thought I bought a cheep rabbit tunnel, then when the litter were a bit bigger a fabric cat tunnel thing and they loved it.

I bought rope toys etc for my puppy when we got him nearly two years ago (where did all that time go!!!) and bought them for the older two as well so they would each have their own. Result: the oldest dog very firmly confiscated ALL the toys and set up his own storage unit in the corner of the livingroom which he was quite happy to guard. There was no fighting or bad language, but nobody was allowed to play with the toys either :).
I compromised by giving them carrots to chew on--that worked.

if you can" nest" when expecting a pup thats what I am doingIf? Absolutely a must! enjoy the whole thing, it's all part of the pleasure of having a new guy in the family.

I agree, Teasel has one and she just loves it! It also means she doesn't pinch all Treacle's and haul the stuffing out of them (Treacle is 6 but is a setter so still just a puppy :-) ).

> A babble ball played with under supervision makes for hilarious play times
My Border Collie has one, and it is put away after play, simply because the Chi's steal from him, and he won't tell them off. I have wonderful times listening to folk the other side of my fence when he takes it into the garden. I am sure they think that I have a talking Dalek as a pet.
He loves his ball, and has never been destructive like the toy dogs. I have to clean it off with a wet wipe when I put it away!

This has made great reading.....one of Nellie's best loved toys as a tiny puppy was one of my hair clips. :)
She always liked small stuffed toys that she could shake, as she was a bit small for the tug toys, but when a bit older she did love her purple Kong Wubba.
Nowadays she has a basket of toys in the living room, and she goes through them (literally removing all the unwanted ones first) to find a favourite, then proceeds to fling it around the room at warp speed.
Good luck with the puppy.....why won't this site show pics?!!!!
one of the funniest toys we got for our new pup is an oinking pig from P@H...the dogs love it, the poor pig gets tossed all over place and is constantly ragged to death...theyve had it about 6mths so far and its still in one peice and is oinking as loudly as ever.
My young bitch had a pig that she loved, until the destuctor got hold of it. She was heartbroken and spent ages trying to get it to grunt. I bought a replacement of a different type but it wasn't the same, she didn't like it. Last week I managed to find the same pig for sale - she was so happy, it was a joy to watch her playing with it.
She is making sure that the wrecker doesn't get hold of this one. All he is allowed are the rope tuggies because all other toys are destroyed very quickly. Along with his bed !! He sleeps on carpet tiles because all other forms of bedding are very quickly shredded :(
