Hi there
Morgan is seven and a half months old and was very slow on the uptake where toilet training was concerned. However, we did get there in the end and over the past three months he hardly had any accidents (those he did have were my fault). A couple of weeks ago he started lifting his leg :D (very funny to see) but now he has taken to doing it on any object (inside or out). The hoover, the kitchen units and cushions on the sofa to name but a few. He has never asked out - we just take him out every 2-3 hours. Does anyone have any ideas on how to stop this behaviour? - some 'helpful' friends suggested rubbing his nose in it :-( - rest assured this is definately NOT going to happen!
Thanks in advance
Shirley

Put ur dog on lead in the house and don't allow any free time unless outside. Go back to house training all over again and treat him like a pup. Is he fixed? Also feeding him and spending time in his favorite marking spot can help.

Hiya shirl
Murphy tried this one --once !!
Is he intact ??( got all his bits )
At this age he is reaching adolescence and he is ' marking his patch '
We were told to re-inforce the training in the house especially around the areas he likes to mark ,we had to wash the surface down ( we lashed the plant ! )and generally watch him like a hawk ,the moment he went-a-sniffing we were on his case .
This worked for us :)

Hi Liz and Dollface
Thanks for the advice, I am definately willing to try anything. Dollface, I have read (in The Perfect Puppy) about using a house-line. Is this what you mean? Where would I get one of these? Morgan still has his 'bits' and we're not planning on having him neutered because of the effect I've heard it could have on his coat. We're not planning on showing him (not many to enter in the Western Isles), he's just a pet but I would still like him to have a nice silky coat (once this puppy fluff is ready to go). Would neutering solve the inappropriate leg lifting?
Thanks again
Shirley:-)

In my experience with male dogs that have visited, the neutered ones were as likely to lift as the entire ones, but that was because they were castrated once they had learnt to cock their leg. It is a dominance/security issue. Mke the place smell of home!
I know several entire and spayed bitches that are also keen markers, but seldom, unless in season, indoors.

Hi Shirl
Can't offer any advice really just to say that I have three entire Cockers and none of them cock their legs over anything inside the house :) Now saying this has probably tempted fate :D :D
One has also been used at stud.
Sorry not much help I know.

Hi, all I used was a six feet leather leash on mine. Fixing him may help, but can't guarentee, but it may discourage him. I fixed our hybrid at a year and a half and he doesn't mark at all, he even squats to pee outside now too, not sure if that has anything to do with it (he's now 9 years old). I have had a dog(boston terrier, one of our pups) come over to visit (intack) and peed in about 4 places in my house (alot of cleaning, how fun), pretty impressed with my Boston Terrier (intack) he never lifted his leg once in our house. He just went over smelled it and flattened his ears back and walked away. Like he knew that was bad or something (very proud of him).
Good luck with ur little man.

Not quite on topic - and sorry to high jack :D - but Solo is 8 and a half months now, and there isn't a sniff of a hint of any leg lifting... I know he is a slow developer but this is just silly!!!! ;) When would be the expected time? Or is it like bitches, and can vary enomously?
Alex

If I were you I would be glad that he isn't doing it yet ;) ...I remember posting here when Thuggy Boy cocked his leg for the first time ......now we have to watch him when we are out or he will try and get a crafty leg lift in no matter where we are...he is fine in the house ..never done it at all but walks can be a nightmare ;)

Several times I've had to buy stuff I didn't want from market stalls etc.....boys will be boys!

Alex,
Cava is 21 months and he still only lifts his leg occassionally, I'm not worried

Wow, that's a relief, Anne! My Mikey is 9 months old and still squatting. The lady who cuts his hair said it can take some a year or more but I guess if lifting their legs means cleaning the curtains ever week, I can live with the squatting!!
