Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / More than one scan to confirm pregnancy?

Do any of you experienced breeders ever have more than one scan to confirm pregnancy?

I may well just be being paranoid, but with 2 misses, it's not surprising! Esme (large gundog breed) was confirmed in whelp with a scan on day 32 (1st mating)/day 30 (2nd mating). The scanner reckoned a good sized litter, about 9 puppies. She also thought Esme took from the 1st mating, which would make today day 41. I started panacur yesterday.

The thing is, and it may be my imagination, but she really doesn't seem to be getting any bigger, which I would have thought she would be with a large litter, and I'm considering another scan to rule out reabsorbing. Am I worrying too soon or would you think it too early for a big size increase? All other signs are OK, bigger, redder nipples, clear mucus discharge etc.

personally I wouldnt ..what will be will be. I would treat her as a pregnant bitch and wait and see.

For a first litter I wouldn't necessarily expect to see much after 6-7 weeks. Suddenly at 7-8 weeks they start ballooning seemingly overnight. I had a bitch pregnant with ten the first time and I guessed four (vet had said one or two), second time I reckoned she wasn't pregnant at all yet she had nine. Sounds to me like you have a very definitely pregnant bitch. :) I have one who is 8 weeks today and it's only in the last week she has started to look huge.

My girl didn't look pregnant on her scan day 34 but a week later we could tell (her 1st litter) and a week later - she's on day 49 now and is huge. She can't curl up to go to sleep and has to shallow breath! Our vet wouldn't count the babies - only confirm there were foetus' there so not sure how many she is having.
Saying that, I heared her dam was massive and went on to have only 4 beit enormous pups.

If she were mine and you are concerned, I would take her back for another scan. Then you know for sure.

HTH, Aimi.

I think I'll give it another week and rethink if she seems no bigger. The scanner did say they were evenly spaced along both horns and looked healthy, it was just with 9 I expected the size increase earlier, maybe I'm just expecting too much too soon. Also my first litter, of 8, was with a different breed, which was short coated and you could see everything really easily. Esme has got a good coat and lots of feathering so the increase in size is probably hidden to some extent.

The scanner I use is a well respected sheep scanner and likes to scan after day 28 (2nd mating).

Well what a difference in a week. Esme is now just over 7 weeks and looks huge, and I have felt a lot of movement. Definitely no need for a 2nd scan to confirm pregnancy!
