Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Mum regurgitating food??
- By meme99 [gb] Date 30.04.11 20:45 UTC
I posted on here yesterday that my 5 weeks pups would not wean from mum.
I have taken the advive and given some raw mince meat (frozen then thawed) mixed with pedigree chum (not advice from here but its all they eat!!). I have also put mum back with her puppies (I was keeping her away during the day time).
All seems to be going well and the puppies seem livlier but only seem to eat out of the bowl when mum is eating from it.
However, twice today mum has been sick. She has no temperature it is normal, doesnt have the runs, still wagging her tail, cleaning up after the puppies and she is still eating. Could she be regurgitating the food for the puppies? Because as soon as she is sick the puppies are gobbling it up before I have time to clean it up. She brought back a full slice of ham that I had given her about 15 monutes prior to her being sick.
I dont want to rush off to the vet if she isnt ill but dont want to leave her if she is!!
I have never had a dog do this before but usually I have split mum from the puppies by now and they only have mum during the night time. Whereas these are with mum all the time.
I also noticed that both times she was sick the puppies food bowl was empty and there was only dried food was down.
Is this normal behaviour? I have heard about it but its scary when it happens! She is fully vac and up to date on everything. She was wormed last tues so I doubt it is that and she isnt dehydrated the skin is still like elastic!!
Thanks

Quite normal, just increase her food and try and keep her away from them while they eat and an hour after she is fed.

To be honest if she is such a good Mum, why fight it as long as everyone is getting enough to eat.  If pups are gaining well,a dn are well covered and Mum isn't too thin.

With my most recent two litters, Myka is the Mum of the world type and she was still allowing full access and topping up after every meal and in between until pups were 7 weeks,a dn then one day decided that was it (though of course I expect the supply was going down as they were eating like horses since 3 weeks of the four meals a day I was giving them.

Inka did what most of mine quite suddenly reducing the number and duration of milk feeds at around 5 weeks.  All my girls continue with the odd comfort suck (literally seconds) until pups go to new homes or until around 10 weeks if still here.  By 11 - 2 Weeks my girls are dry.

I always add puppy milk to the pups food until around 6 or 6 weeks.  Basically for as long as bitch still gives milk feeds.

Yep, totally normal, Ellie always tried to do that with both her litters. Like Brainless said, try to keep her away for an hour or so after you've fed her, that way she won't be able to bring it up (though Ellie still tried!) and if you wait that hour before trying to feed the puppies their food, they may be hungrier to try it out.

Thank you your advice was fantastic and has worked. I am enjoying the natural weaning as opposed to forcing it as I have always done on the past. the pups are so much livlier and she is still cleaning up!!
No more regurgitation but they still only eat out of the bowl when mum is eating from it but all are chunky and healthy!
Big Thank you this site is fantastic!!!!

Such good Mums are worth their weight in gold, even if we rather have the control take away from us.

If the pups are nice and chunky, Mum has not lost condition to an unacceptable degree then let her decide how she rears and weans her babies.

I am sure by the time they start to leave in the next two/three weeks they will tuck in nicely as they won't have any other option with Mum no longer an option.
