My golden retriever has been shaking his ears all night and all this morning. We recently lay some new grass seed in our garden and covered it up with polythene however I may be wrong but I think a seed has creeped it's way into our dogs ear. Is there and products you can by that could flush the seed out his ear or is this a vet only procedure. Like I say I'm presuming it's grass seed as it's came on all of a sudden. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

it may be mites or could be toothache.. ..is there a lot of dark brown wax? have you got any epi-otic ear cleaner you could try flushing it out but be careful not to  'poke' about other than that a visit to the vet is required.

I wouldn't "wait and see" as it does not take long for a perforated ear drum to develop. A vet's consultation fee to check it out would be worth it in my opinion.

Yes loads of brown wax after all. I have took him into the pet shop today and they have gave me Otodex drops that the vet prescribes as they believe it's mites. Hopefully that should do the trick. He's settled down already. Thanks very much for your advice!

loads of wax is a good indication of mites... hope it sorts it out ..if he continues scratching or shaking his head he may need a stronger drop such as canaural which is only available on prescription..sometimes mite cause the ear to become inflamed  he may need the vet to take a closer look as it can be painful for your pet.
I only buy epiotic or similar to clean the ear any redness or such I visit the vet.

Had this recently with my young female.  Treated it with some antibacterial ear cleaner from PAH but it didn't touch it.  Over-enthusiastic vet (trying to impress his student?!) wanted to admit her so he could sedate her and look in her ear properly!  I requested we start with antibiotics (Canaural) and these did the trick within 24hrs - although I made sure we administered them for the advised length of time.
