Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / still some bleeding
- By Loreen [us] Date 01.05.11 12:50 UTC
My bitch is about 11 or 12 days post breeding. She is still bleeding a little. I have had bitches bleed a week after and go onto have a big litter, but this is a little longer than I have ever experienced.

She is eating and drinking normally, no temp, healthy. I am not thinking pyo at all, but curious as to why she would still be bleeding. It is a dark red/brown color, not all the time, but at least 1x a day there is a decent amount on either a sheet or when I check her. Not as much as when she is in season, but it is there.

Speaking with 2 repro vets over FB, but until I can get her in on Tuesday just wanted to see what others had to say.

Thanks for any help!

I've had bitches bleed from start of season till whelping and still go on to have a healthy litter of 7 pups.  Not the usual admittedly, but it worked out fine here.

I've had this happen, exactly as you describe. The vet thought our bitch might not be holding, or more likely she was just losing one (not all pups conceived will be viable). He put the bitch on Synulox for a week just to be on the safe side. She was fine after about a week and went on to have her litter with no trouble.

Hope all goes well with your bitch.

I have had mated and unmated bitches bleed for a full month from the start of a season, with no problems.
