Out 10 year old doberman, Sable was recently found to have a tumor along side of her heart. We only realized that she had a problem when she began coughing and vomiting terribly. She also was diagnosed with pneumonia, which is now clearing up after being on amoxicillan.
What side effect will prednisone have on Sable? Last evening she panted and paced the house for 45 minutes, going into rooms she WILL NOT go into. She seemed to be delerious. Eventually she did calm down, but wanted nothing to do with us. Today she appears to be back to her normal routine. Was this a side effect of the prednisone?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Hi Guest, the usual side effects of short term preds is increased appetite, thirst & putting weight on & a general feeling of well being. I don`t know what would cause her to act strange last night so why don`t you give your vet a ring & ask him.

Our cat was on prednisone for awhile because she had a bowel disorder. It changed her personality a lot. She became very aggresive. I don't know if it is the same with dogs or not. As soon as she was taken off of it, she went back to being a lovely cat again. Shirl :D

Long term use of prednisalone can cause cushings syndrome, but dont panic my gsd bitch has been on them for the last 6 years and has showed no signs of this condition.
Sorry to hear about Sable's tumour and hope it will respond to the steroids. Could she have been especially sensitive to the fireworks?

As a human on the same Steroid, I'm not surprised at her behaviour as it does change your personality at different times especially in the early stages.
It can cause anxiety and insomina, even delusions dependant on the levels the body is producing naturally, usually after about 48 hrs this sort of nighttime behaviour stops as her adrenal glands will reduce their production of the steroid to allow for the excess. The insomnia can last a lot longer unfortunatley, well it is for us humans anyway.
