Has this happened to anyone. I thought Molly (11 mth shih tzu) had gagged on a small piece of thin ham I gave her at 5pm (well it was new years eve :) ) but then she choked again at 7pm. Straight up emergency vet (miles away). He said she was the sort of dog who could do this because of squashed face (am trying to keep post short so that is what he meant) so he gave her an injection to open her airways (millophyline) and 2 of the same tabs and I will take her to vet tomorrow. She was very, very poorly last night so sat up all night with her but is much better now. She choked a few times and it was awful. Also this happened about 5 months ago - rushed her up vet he said he could find nothing wrong and she has been fine since.
Has this happened to anyone on here with their dogs - just needed a bit of reassurance today as cant take her to vet until tomorrow. She doesnt wear a collar just a harness because she is so small.
She is due to be spayed on 9 Jan but I am wondering whether to postpone it until after second season because of the general anaesthetic. What do you think?
Many thanks from a tired Gina :) - I am going to have a drink NOW for last night!

Hi Gina, sorry no advice to offer, although I was considering getting a puglet to add to my brood in the future, so am interested in probs relating to flatter faced breeds, (to be honest to more I find out, the more I am deciding against it :( ) but just posting to say - poor you and Molly:( Hope everything is ok! Have a good drink to make up for it. Julie:)

Oh Gina, poor little Molly:( I remember your posts from before and it was thought it was a bit of fluff etc. I do hope she is OK.
With regard to the spaying, I don't really know, how was she with her last season? I think I remember vaguely she had a tough time, but I could be confused? If it wasn't too bad I would leave it to be honest.
Keep me updated and all the best to Molly.

Hi Julie, dont be put off I wouldnt be without Molly for anything. She is usually the most funniest clever little thing :)
Hi Anita, I am now wondering if it was fluff (the last time) but it was awful seeing her so ill this time - much worse. The vet said she would be hypo from the caffeine in the injection but she was so quiet and timid - horrible. Not so bad now though.
She had a phantom almost straight after her first season and that is why she is going to be spayed. Just worried about the anaesthetic. Will have to interrogate the vet tomorrow :) The vet last night said he thought one of her eyes had more white round it than the other - gawd knows what he meant by that but again will ask the vet tomorrow!
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU BOTH - I am starting to have a drink now - Baileys first and then the usual B&C xxxx
I am also gonna look up millophyline on the net too later

Mmmm yes I thought I remembered something about her last season, bless her cottons. Yep consult with the vet tomorrow, and if he doesn't satisfy your questions, seek a second opinion.
On a lighter note - or perhaps more serious, you are seriously considering following up a Baileys with a B & C? It'll curdle

I thought Baileys could act like milk ... line the stomach for all the B&C's :D :D
Will let you know what vet says tomorrow - she is sleeping again at the moment .. so sweet ...

Hi Gina
Sorry to hear about Molly. I hope things are getting back to normal for you. What a start to the New Year:-(. I read you post last night on the raw hide topic and didn't think it was serious.
Best Wishes for the New Year :-)

Hi Gina,
Poor Molly, and you, I hope she is ok now. I know what it's like, sitting up all night, worrying about a poorly pet.....
Don't know much about it, but I think I once heard about a condition in some small and flat faced breeds, something to do with a collapsing trachea? I seem to remember this involves periodic choking, but not too sure if I'm even right, or it was something else entirely!
Probably no help at all, but just a thought that popped into my head.

Hi Liz that was what the vet said and we have been so careful of her throat too. So will ask my vet tomorrow. With fingers crossed I say she has been so much better today no choking at all.
Thanks everyone for your concerns, I'll let you know what the vet thinks tomorrow.

hope she's OK Gina
Hugs to you and her xxx
Like Liz, I was thinking it sounds like it might be trachea problems. If you do a search on google for collapsed trachea you could see if the symptoms match up.

Hi Gina,
Poor Molly :( Hope she's feeling better.
My last dog was on Millophyline(sp) to help open his airways. It was interesting to see how much it costs. At my vet's it was just under five pounds for a months supply but I can't remember if he got 1 or 2 tablets a day

Hope they can sort out whatever's causing Molly's prob.
Dot

Could it be an overlong soft palate? I think I remeber being told that the flat faced breeds often had trouble, as the palate was the length it would be in a normal faced breed, and that is why some of these breeds breath loudly, and can have these gagging problems????

beat me to it brainless :)

Some Brachycephalic breeds do or may suffer from this
Stenotic nares - An abnormal narrowing of the nasal passages, predisposing to loud, difficult mouth breathing, snoring, overheating and other breathing difficulties.
My BT does like a backwards sneeze (sounds like one) but is normal in this breed.
To having her spayed u do want to make sure ur vet is familiar with the Brach breeds because of the anestetic (sp).
Hope ur little one is ok.

Hope all goes well at the vets. Thinking of you and your Molly.
My mum in laws little yorkie has a throat problem she sounds like she is choking when she runs around or gets excited. Her vet said her throat tightens up for some reason? For a tiny little dog core can she make some noise!! :)
Hope all goes well. Julieann xxxx

Hi everyone
Went to vet this morning and she said she thought it could be a soft palette. She isnt on any medication at the moment and instead of being spayed on 9 Jan she will have the op on Mon 13 Jan when the vet who specialises in this sort of thing can have a look at her throat under the anaesthetic. I shall mention what Dollface says as well (nicely!! LOL). She hasnt gagged at all since New Years Eve. It frightened the life out of me. Funnily enough she isnt a very "noisy" dog. Sneezes now and again but has not made lots of noise or much snoring since she was a lot younger. Her heart is sound too.
Thanks everyone
Gina x
PS re the price of the tabs in my other post, my vet thought it that it was a bit pricey too for just 2 tabs!!! - I am still gobsmacked but they did the trick.
Maybe this all happened when it did for a reason, Gina. Putting off the speying so the specialist can take a look at Molly's throat sounds like a good idea.
Hope all goes well.

Thanks Joyce. I had to go to work today and she went ballistic when I came in (loves me :D ) so had to pick her up quick in case she couldnt breath. Poor old Barney was running round me like a madman wondering why I was holding her and not him at the same time!
