Topic Dog Boards / General / Dog scared of own 'wind'
- By tina s [gb] Date 27.04.11 18:59 UTC
does anyone else have a dog scared of its own wind? my bitch is nearly 7 now and on the rare occasion that she blows a raspberry, she jumps up in fright and runs out of the room! she sometimes comes back in to sniff the 'place'. am i the only one with a dog this wimpish?
- By mastifflover Date 27.04.11 19:07 UTC
LOL, bless her!!
They must take her by suprise.

> am i the only one with a dog this wimpish?

No, my sisters dog will do that if she lets a really big one go.

LOL, I'm so sorry, a dogs fear is not funny, but I can't stop laughing. I can just picture a completely disgusted look on a dogs face as it comes back in and sniffs the offending bottom-burp :-D

Being more serious this time -
does she only do this when you HEAR the 'wind', or everytime she has 'wind' ?

By the smell from my dog ( ) dogs have wind that is silent too, it's just that the noisy ones are less common.

Could it be that the noisy ones alarm her, either from the actual sound itself, or maybe the association of a noisy one with people erupting into fits of laughter? My dog can look a little unsure of the fuss if he does a noisy one and we all start laughing at him. Trying to ignore noisy wind may help, also try blowing raspberrys with your mouth & giving her a biccy (positive association with the sound).

OR, it could just be the sensation that starles her.

Ahhh, bless her :)

Two of mine are frightened of their own gases!!! In fact it is the one noise ( when made by a human with the lips) that stops my boy doing something naughty. However, no one elses emissions seems to worry them :)

its not her silent ones, she doesnt care about them it must be the noise that scares her and i assume she doesnt know its from her botty? i dont laugh at her, i just say aahh bon bon its ok and she usually goes all silly

This amused me. My lad always looks slightly startled and disgusted/ offended at his own 'emissions' if a noise is involved. More amusing is that if the occasional, noisy human emission occurs in his presence, he jumps up to investigate its origin immediately- first turning towards his own rear with an almost accusatory look on his face. If his face is anything to go by, he finds human sneezing both horrifying and revolting.

Ahhh Bless her!

Our dogs rarely have offensive gas - I'm sure they must pass some but we rarely are aware of it ;) - but our old dog (back in the 80's) when we first had him had really BAD wind, probably caused by the change of diet.    What made us laugh was that when he passed wind he'd get out of his bed and walk away giving US a really filthy look   We were sure he blamed us for the smell LOL

One of my mothers males is just the same, he was once sat next to me, when he blew a loud raspberry, he looked in shock at his own bottom and then dashed across the room to get away from it, we laughed so much, glad he is not the only one to do this, I've never seen a dog do this before, he's done it several times since and he is the alpha male too. I can't believe a dog can be so scared of it's own wind either, especially when fireworks and other loud noises don't bother him.

I wonder if it dates back to giving themselves away to prey or predators, so they run from the noise to avoid detection, I'd rather believe that than think they are terrified of exploding or understanding the noise. :-D :-D

Bless her!!!

My last boy used to look at his rear end, take a sniff and then walk out of the room with his ears back looking very sheepish. We used to chuckle.....it was like he wanted to leave us with the horrible smell.

Sorry, no help at all

My 6 year old bitch does this, and barks angrily at the noise... we've only just worked it out, but we think this may be why she occasionally has a bark in the night and scares us to death!!! She's a plonker :-)

LOL   :-)

Years ago, I had a leather sofa, when a male visitor blew a raspberry.  It rippled across the leather, and "shot" my Toy Poodle boy, who ran like hell!

Do wonder if they think they have had an accident.

It reminds me of one of our rescue GSDs who was a windy boy, but if we said to him did you do a Doyle (Doyle Carte) he would bark at us and back away - we thought that at some time in his life he must have been chastised for breaking wind.

all my girls jump up and look behind them if they pass wind when they are asleep, if they are awake they just let it go!!! then give a look as if to say 'get a whiff of that' :)

I have dogs who, when a person farts (ahem!) jump up and smell *their own* bums!
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 28.04.11 07:47 UTC
Mine aren't at all bothered about the noises and smells of farts, but I do have one who occasionally howls in his sleep and wakes himself up with a jump!
- By suejaw Date 28.04.11 08:13 UTC
Lol, oh bless.

Ours tend to fart, then when the aroma takes hold they sniff the air and follow the scent back to their bums and look rather confused, as if to say, it came from there???
Any noises they again look rather quickly at their rear ends, confused and then look around the room as if something else did it and not them...

Doyle Carte...??? LOL :)

Are you from "oop North" somewhere by any chance...??? Have never heard that expression in the whole of My Life....! :) On a more serious note...do you happen to know the origin of it...???

Have been waking My Self up laughing in the middle of the night since starting to read this thread...Well....My word....you learn something New every day on this forum...!

LOL I live in Lincolnshire but I am a Cockney and that is Cockney rhyming slang. Don't know when it started but it must be relatively recent because the Doyle Carte company is not so very old at a guess just over 100 years.
- By JeanSW Date 29.04.11 08:48 UTC
I knew it was Cockney rhyming slang Jackie.  :-)  :-)

One of mine used blow huge trouser rippers and look at the nearest human with a " you filthy swine " look on his face and stalk out of the room, makes a change for the dog to blame the human lol.
