Hi Everyone,

It is 3 years since my last litter and I have just checked at my vets to see if they will still remove dewclaws when my pups are 2/3 day's old.
They said they will charge around £80 depending on litter size and time it takes.

Does this sound reasonable to you?

Last time they didn't do 2 properly and they grew back oddly. I wasn't sure if I should ring round or not.

My vet charges one consultation fee, so around £20, regardless of number of pups. In fact last time he didn't even charge a consultation fee, did it for nothing. But my previous vet charged £12 a pup and the one before that £20 a pup! The £12 one did a bad job. Just one of many reasons for why I am glad I changed vets.

Just out of interest (and not because I'm thinking of doing it, as I'll be leaving dew claws on) does anyone on here do their own dew claws? 

I only have rear ones removed, and always used to do my own without any problems. Then got presented with King Kong's dewclaws (in 3 different litters) and when trying to take them off ended up with a pup with a one inch gash and bone sticking out and leg bone showing through. (He ended up fine!) Now I use the vet for these super big ones (same size as rest of toes, like an extra toe in same place as the others, NOT out of line with the others at all) even the vets have been shocked at the size of them, yet I get them in BOTH my breeds) with lots of bone in. Normal thin ones you can snip off in a second.

I can, and have done, my own pups many times but my friend does them now. Her eyesight is better than mine! 

Brr, wouldn't dare do it myself! But my breed just have front ones and they are tucked in nicely, no need to remove as long as you and new owners are aware of them. Not like my friend's poor Lab whose dewclaw got caught when he was galloping around madly with my first two dogs when they were young and there was blood everywhere. I still feel guilty, lol! If I had rear ones I'd probably have them removed, as a groomer it's a right pain to find them on breeds where you don't expect them. I used to do a Yorkie with double rear ones, and I currently have some Lhasa / Shih Tzu crosses with rear ones too.

Yes, easy peasy, and have removed many on guinea pigs.  (Disqualification for show.)

So why the heck can't I pluck up courage to do my own, especially as my newborn breed is not much smaller than a guinea pig.  I just find them so very, very small, and get someone younger with better eye sight (my vet.)  He charges me around £30 a litter.  But my breed only has a couple of pups anyway.

I know that my mentor does their Chi pups at 3 days without blinking.
