It's quite hard to mate 2 maiden dogs, you will probably get on better if you have an experience person to help. Have you read the Book of the Bitch? If not, get a copy. Before you try again though, please do make sure you have done all the appropriate health testing for your breed, if your dog is only a year old he is perhaps too young to do these tests yet so you will need to wait for another season before the testing is done. Read the 'breeding FAQ' section on this forum too. Also you should ideally show your dogs so that the results will show you whether they are good enough examples of the breed to add to the gene pool, or if you're not into showing, get some people from your breed club or at the least the breeder of your two dogs, to come and have a look and tell you honestly if they think you should breed from these two. Also have plenty of money set aside in case of veterinary emergencies at whelping time and for all the extra quality food the bitch will need, and be prepared for the heartache if you should lose any puppies, or God forbid lose your bitch. If you've done all these things and are still prepared to go ahead, good luck! :-)

What day of her season is she on, might be that she's not ready yet and you need to try again in a day or two.

It is possible that if they live together he will not have the confidence to mate her. Would make sure you have someone with experience of stud dogs to help you before you try again as both dog and bitch can be injured if they are not correctly controlled.

This is what happened at the previous season with my bitch and dog. She is top dog at home and even a glance from my boy would have her give him that sideway's "look that kills"

Now he has turned 3 though, he is much more mature and we had good matings this time. Your boy is still very immature at one year old. Unless you wish to tie your lines together would it not be better to go with a more experienced stud perhaps related to your boy this time?
