Topic Dog Boards / General / chinese dogs rescued

http://www.examiner.com/pet-rescue-in-national/chinese-dogs-rescued-from-slaughter-and-dinner-table  I was watching this story on the news tonight and found it totally touching that so many people came to the rescue.  Personally I can't get my head round eating dogs but was really touched by the rescue efforts and horrified that there is no animal cruelty laws in China (according to the news at 10!)

They eat dogs because that is their custom.  There are people who find eating beef or pork disgusting.  Different strokes for different folks.

I don't have a problem with people eating dogs (other than eating carnivores is more hazardous to health than eating herbivores); it's the manner in which they're raised and slaughtered I have problems with, just as I do with any food animal.

"520 dogs, many of whom still had collars with bells and name tags, indicating they were stolen from their owners"

I'm sure the owners of the pet dogs do not agree that it's OK to steal & eat thier pets :(

They do because it is. However, they also skin them alive in the belief that this makes the meat more tender. There is a clip on You Tube I believe, showing part of a documentary ... pretty horrific.

Exactly.  I eat meat but don't think it is ok to steal someone's cows to eat.

There is a rather long video somewhere - it is, I think, the only cruelty video I've never been able to watch all the way through and I know a lot of people who watched it the same time I did were either physically ill, fainted or both.

Re. eating dogs - as JG says I'm not against it per se, it's how they are raised, shipped and slaughtered and the theft of pets that disturbs me.

Someone on another forum had a chinese last year and found a microchip in it :-(
