It is a big upheaval for a dog being rehomed as an adult so you have to go back to basics as if you are house training a pup, they will usually come good with patience and guidance.

Has the dog been used to company 24/7 either human or other dogs, if so then she will feel abandoned to suddenly be on her own in a strange place.

Ignore any wrong doings and give lots of praise when she gets something right.

How long does she stay on her own during the day? Seeing how long they've had her, I would consider this "normal". New people, new environment, new everything. She will settle after a while! I think gradually building the time she's alone might help. Maybe start by restricting her movement to one room for 10 mins, with you in the hosue still so you can intervene if she howls... Showing that you are not abandoning her for days on end (which is probably what she thinks - separation anxiety). I think I would give her a room for the day time even if you want to keep her to a crate at night, crates aren't meant to be locked (particularly not for long times!), for me they are more like Dens, they should feel conformtable in them and this is why I rarely use a create after the first few weeks unless they want to sleep in them with the door open at night.

hi, at the moment she has only been left for an hour but the howling and barking starts as soon as the door closes and doesnt stop until we are home i just hope that she settles before the neighbours start complaining

Would they be offended if you bought or suggested a book for them?
"Who said it would be easy.. or straightforward, or cheap?" by Alison Rowbotham (An honest guide to choosing and living with a second-hand dog) is a lovely litle book, I have a copy, and one thing it does go into great detail is separation anxiety which is all too common in rescues, and step-by-step ways to work through it.

It's the red booklet towards the bottom of this page:

hi we have noticed today  that she is in season blood spots and a male dog trying to mount her but she isnt due until june could this contribute to the howling when left alone?

The agitation is unlikely to be the season, and due is a very vague thing, as you can guarantee the ladies will never come in when you expect/want them to.

Of course they now need to ensure she is kept away from males for 4 weeks to be on safe side.

If she appears to be having shorter season intervals then it would be best to spay her two months after the season started so that she isn't too close to the next one.

i think things are getting better we manage to go out today and it was 30 mins until she started howling and barking which is the longest she has gone and she also slept through last  night without crying, so fingers crossed!!
