I believe Synulox is suitable for bitches in whelp, and honey helps to sooths the symptoms.I would have thought benylin would have been ok,or at least a paediatric version.Hope all goes well, but ask the vet for advice especially for A.Bs.

I use milk and honey when my lot have KC.  My vet tells me that antibiotics are only necessary if the infection is prolonged or it's a very old or very young patient.  Other than that, it's just treating the symptoms.  Complete rest and plenty of fluids.

Have you actually asked your vet?  Not a time for asking forum help or googling remedies as no one knows your bitches condition, temp, etc.

Hi Welshie,

Yes, this happened  to one of my bitches many years ago. The Dog who l was showing at the time, picked it up at a Ch. Show, and then it passed on to all of my other dogs, the pregnant one included. I can't remember exactly, but l think that she was 6/7 weeks in whelp. I can't remember if she was prescribed medication or not, but l seem to remember reading on over-the-counter cough medicines, that it was not to be taken if pregnant. I don't want to be pessimistic, BUT, your puppies will probably come down with it shortly after birth. Mine came down with it at 3/4 days.

The Vet started them off with Synulox which unfortunately, made no difference, then he put them on to a different medication, -for the life of me, l cannot remember what it was called, but l know that l had to inject them myself twice a day, which l absolutely hated doing. This didn't make for much improvement either, they were still getting worse and some were dying. Then l saw one of the other vets, and he prescibed penicillin, AS WELL AS the medication they were already on. So this meant that l was having to give them 2 injections each, twice a day. What a nightmare that was! Still, from then on they started to improve, and l didn't lose any more pups.

With my pups, it turned into pneumonia, and it was that, which killed them, not the actual Kennel Cough. I found that sprinkling a little Olbas Oil, or something similar onto the Vet Bed helped a bit with their breathing, also giving the mother raw garlic a few time a day will not do any harm either. My bitch had never had Kennel Cough before, so the puppies did not have any immunity to it, but another bitch of mine who had had Kennel Cough before, when her puppies were born, they had it much, much  less severely, and l didn't lose any of that litter.

Maybe, if possible, it might be a good idea to keep the mother out of the room where she is going to whelp, in order to try to minimise any infection in there.

It has been such a long time ago now,  but if l can remember anything else that may be of help, l will get in touch with you. You have my very best wishes at this worrying time.

Josie
