Topic Dog Boards / General / Kennel club (affix) name?
- By jetray [gb] Date 17.04.11 15:59 UTC
Is it just for bigger breeders to have affix or someone with only 1 or 2 bitches or stud dog??
Is it good idea to have affix even if you only occasionally breed litter.
Friend of ours has bred litter which will be kennel club register with the intent of keeping pup for show purpose (know if there's one good enough for showing). as she would like to apply for affix and then register litter, if there is quality pup that comes on to be good for showing then it have affix . as can affix be added to litter add later even if they been register?  thanks

An affix basically means that people can easily trace a dog back to its breeder, Affixes take time to be processed then it has to be published to see if anybody disputes the name if nobody disputes then your friend can use it. If the bitch is already mated its too late to register the litter under the Affix but can be added later at the end of the name.

I like to see an affix on a pedigree as it is easier to find out who bred the dog and ask around about the dogs in that line, the breeders affix goes at the front and the new owners affix if they have one goes at the end of the registered name, this shows which breeders value whose dogs which is great for someone new to breeding.

I like that my pups have my affix attached, as I am coming late to breeding there may not be many but as I am proud of what work went into having my first litter I want others to know I am happy for others to see my name there.

When you are at a show it is great to see the names and recognise the well known kennels and the lesser known doing well in the ring, gives us newbies hope.

In the US very few breeders will register the name of the pup with the AKC meaning the buyer can register it with their kennel name[not always an official one]this makes it very hard to figure out who bred a dog just by it's name alone.

A dog does not need to have an affix to win..there are/have been people in my breed who done a fair bit of winning with no affix.
I find it a bit pointless for people who only have males to have an affix. Just my opinion

Some people apply for an affix before they have even had 1 litter - my nephew is planning on mating his bitch later this year and has already made out his list of name choices and will be sending them off next week so there is time to get the affix ready for the pups arrival, even though she is not even in season yet.  In the case of you friend, it all depends if it may be too late or not based on if they want the KC paperwork to go with any pups sold, or if they can explain to the buyers that their may be a delay due to having to apply for the affix before the registration can be submitted.  If they decide to register without an affix, apply for 1 and then add it, it can only be added at the end of the of the name.  So they could register their chosen pup  "Bonzo Doggy"  apply for affix "Doodah"  and then do a name change so pup becomes "Bonzo Doggy at Doodah"

People who do not even breed can have one.  I know several people who own only males who like to have their own affix so they can add it to their dogs names so they can all be associated with them and each other, it's like a surname.
